AlthoughmycolleaguesandIhavedescribedmanynewspeciesofMalpighia-
ceaeoverthelast32years,wecontinuetoencounteradditionalnoveltiesaswestudy
problematicgroupsandnewlyreceivedgiftsandloans.Thispaperdealswithafew
ofthoseadditionstothefloraoftheneotropics.

Woodyvine;stemsdenselyandpersistentlysericeouswithlong,whitish,strongly
appressedhairs,glabrescentinage.Laminaoflargerleaves9.5-11.5cmlong,3.7^.5
cmwide,ellipticalorwidestslightlyabovethemiddle,cuneateatbase,long-acumi-
nate at apexwith theacumen 1-1.5cmlong,initiallylooselysericeous above but
soonglabrateexceptoftenpersistentlysericeousonmidribandsometimesonmajor
lateralveins,thinlybutpersistentlysericeousbelowwiththehairsdenseonmidrib
andlateralveins,bearing1-3(4)peltateglandsbelowoneachsidebetweenmidrib
andmarginonlateralveinsinproximal2/3,theprincipallateralveins5-7oneach
sideofmidrib,thecross-veinsstronglyscalariform;petiole8-10mm long,densely
andpersistentlysericeous,eglandular;stipulesinterpetiolar,distinct,0.3-0.5mmlong,
triangularorrounded,often hiddenbyhairsonstem. Inflorescencesterminaland
lateral,paniculatewiththeflowersinumbelsof4(-6),theaxesdenselyandpersis-
tentlylooselysericeousortomentose;bractsandbracteoles 1-1.5mmlong.0.7-0.9
mmwide,triangularorovate,abaxiallydenselytomentose,adaxiallyglabrous,cadu-
cous(mostlyfallingbeforeanthesis);peduncle0-1 mmlong;pedicel6-9mmlong,
denselysericeousorappressed-tomentose.Sepals3-4 mm long,2.5-3.5 mm wide,
elongate-triangularwiththeapexobtuse,distallyreflexedinbudandopenflower,

locules;stamens opposite posterior-lateral sepals with filament 2.5 mm long, the
antherwithlocules0.3-0.5mm longandconnectivenotswollenandnotorhardly
exceedinglocules;stamenoppositeposteriorpetalwithfilament2-2.3mmlong,the
antherlackingorrepresentedbyarudimentaryconnectiveca.0.3mmlong,without
loculesorbearingminute(sterile?)locules.Ovary 1-1.5mmhigh,denselyhirsute;
styleshirsuteonproximal 1/2-2/3,distallytaperedtoverysmalltruncateorslightly
capitateapicalstigmas;anteriorstyle2.2-2.5mmlong,bowedbacktowardanterior
sepal;posteriorstyles3-3.3mmlong,thickenedinproximalhalf,bowedtowardpos-
teriorpetal.Samarapersistentlysericeous,35-45 mmlong;dorsalwing28-40mm
long,13-18mmwide;nutca.5-7mmindiameter,glabrousinsidelocule,bearingon
bothsidesseveralwinglels2-7mmhigh,thesemostlyparalleltoventralareoleand
imbricated but some (the smallest,outermost winglets) sometimesradiatingfrom
areole;carpophoreshortandbroad(ca.0.5-1mmlong,0.3-0.5mmwide),probably
non-functional;ventralareole3-3.5mmlong,2-2.5mmwide,ovate.

ThisspeciesisnamedforAbelPiherMacedaChuan(b.1973),whocollectedthe
holotypeandoneoftheparatypes.
Banisteriopsismacedaecanbecomparedtootherspeciesofthegenusonthefol-
lowingbases:petioleseglandular,leafglandspeltate,bractsandbracteolescaducous,
sepals elongated and triangular,petals cream-colored,posterior petal constricted
attheapexoftheclaw,antherspilose,andsamarawithseveralimbricatedwinglets
onthesidesofthenutandglabrousinsidethelocule.Accordingtothetreatment
byGates(1982),thosecharacteristicssuggestarelationshiptoB.adenopoda(Adr.
Juss.)B.Gates,B.membranifoHa(Adr.Juss.)B.Gates,orB.pulchraB.Gates.Bani-
steriopsisadenopoda,aspeciesofsoutheasternBrazil,iseliminatedbythefactthatits
laminaisvelutinousonbothsurfaces.Banisteriopsisinendiranifolia,anotherspecies
ofsoutheasternBrazil,hasglandsonthepetiole,roundedsepals,andtheposterior
petal withoutaconstriction attheapexofthe claw.Banisteriopsispulchraagrees
with B.macedaeinhavingpeltateleafglands,deciduousbractsandbracteoles,the
posteriorpetalconstrictedattheapexoftheclaw,piloseanthers,andthesamarawith
well-developedlateralwingletsonthenut.Moreover,itoccursasfarwestasBolivia,

comingclosertosouthernPeruthananyothercloserelativeofB.macedae.B.pul-
chravar.pidchrahasthepetiolebiglandularattheapex,thebractsandbracteoles
persistlongerthaninB.macedae,thepetalsarepink,andtheleavesareverydensely
sericeousbelow.InB.pidchravar.glabrataB.Gates(knownonlyfromasinglecol-
lectionfromLaPazProvince,Bolivia)thelaminaisglabratebelow,morehkethe
thinlysericeouslaminaofB.macedae,butGatesdescribeditashavingpinkpetals,
notthecream-coloredpetalsofB.macedae,whichalsodiffersinhavingallthreeof
theposterioranthersmuchreduced.Indeed,inthetypeofB.macedae(theonlycol-
lectionseenwithflowers),theantheroppositetheposteriorpetalisrudimentaryor
lacking.Banisteriopsismacedaeisalsonotableforhavingsmallglandsontheanterior
sepal.WhenmorecollectionsareknownfromwesternBoliviaandsouthernPeruit
maybecomenecessarytocombineB.macedaeandB.pidchravar.glabrata,butif
sotheformernameshouldbeadopted;Iamsatisfiedthattheplantdescribedhere
deservesspeciesstatus.

Distribution. Known only from montane tropical forest at 1880-2600 m in

tions,whichtheircollectorslabeledascomingfromZamora-ChinchipeProvinceJ.

ByrsonimahomeieriisnamedinhonorofDr.JlirgenHomeier(b.1968),aplant
ecologistattheUniversityofGottingenwhohascollecteditseveraltimesduringhis
studiesintheSanFranciscoreserveinEcuador.
TherelationshipsofByrsonimahomeieriaretobesoughtamongotherspecies
withyellowpetals,smoothlyconnatestipules,andantherswiththeconnectivenot
orhardlyexceedingthelocules,ofwhichtherearemany.Noneofthem,however,
hasthecombinationofcharacteristicsthatsetsthisspeciesapart:thick,stiff,nearly
glabrousleaves;veryshort,similar,persistentbractsandbracteoles;stout,straight
pedicelsthatturnredinageandremainstraightinfruit;sepalsturningredinage
andaccrescentinfruit;andcompletelyglabrousanthers.Thepedicelsareespeciahy
notable,becausemostyehow-fioweredspeciesofByrsonimahaveslenderpedicels
thatareoftencircinateinbudanddecurvedinfruit.Thespeciesmostcloselyrelated
toB.homeierimaybeB.hypoleucaTurcz.,atreeofmontaneVenezuelaandColom-
bia.Ithassimilarstipules,straightpedicels,yellowpetals,andantherswithshortcon-
nectives,butdiffersinhavingtheleavesdenselyandpersistentlysericeousbelow,the
bractslong,narrow,anddeciduous,andtheantherssparselysericeous.

thatitcamefromLosLlanos,Meta,butthatisclearlytheresultofaclericalerror,
because thetypedinformation on the specimenstates thatitcame from north of
Codazzi,whichwasformerlyinMagdalenaandisnowinCesar;theCASandMO
sheetshavethesametypedinformation,plusaprintedlabelforMagdalena.]

Thisspecies,whichisnamedforthecountrywhereitisendemic,wastreatedby
Cuatrecasas(1958)asHeteropterystomentosaAdr.Juss.,aspeciesofsouth-central
Brazil,Paraguay,and adjacent Bolivia.The Colombian plants are certainly refer-
abletothecomplexofspeciescontainingH.tomenlosa,buttheymostresembleH.
falciferaAdr.Juss.,averysimilarspeciesknownonlyfromBolivia.Thelatterdiffers
fromli.colonihianainhavingamoretwininghabit,leavessmooth(notverrucose)
above,amoreopeninflorescence,andthestemsandinflorescencelessexuberantly
hairy.ItremainstobeseenwhetherH.colombianawillmaintainitsdistinctnesswhen
thecomplexisbetterknown,especiallyfromPeruvianpopulations.

ThisspeciesofMascagniaisendemictoBolivarandadjacentCesarinnorthern
Colombia.It is immediatelyrecognizable in fruitbecausethelateralwingsofthe
samara are mostly dissected irregularly into 3-5 narrowly rectangular segments,
whilethelargedorsalcrestisentireandextendedbeyondthenut(especiallyatthe
apex)likeaprow.Inhisprotologue,Moris(1848)providedathoroughdescription
andexcellentillustration,whichleavemeinnodoubtastotheidentityofhisplant,
eventhough1havenotseeneitherofhissyntypes(thesecondsyntypewasaflowering
specimen,alsocollectedbyBerteroin1820atMompos).Niedenzu(1928,p.217)never

mihiinvisae"ofTetrapterys.Cuatrecasas(1958)didnotmentiontheMorisnameor
publication.IfhehadeverseenMoris'sillustrationhesurelywouldhavetakenup
hisnameandmadethecombinationinMascagniainsteadofdescribingtheplant
againasM.tenuis.

IamhappytonamethisspeciesforFrankAlmeda(b.1946),oneofthecollectors
ofthetype,whohashadanillustriousandproductivecareerinsystematicbotany,
specializinginthefamilyMelastomataceae.Mascagniaalmedaeiscloselyrelatedto
M. vacclniifoliaNied.(Fig.3),with which itsharesat leastthree synapomorphies:
adventitiousrootson thestems,asamaracompletelydevoidofadorsalcrest,and
vertical extensionsofthediscbelowthe fruittothe topofthemassive torus.The
adventitiousrootsareuniquenotonlyinthegenus,but(sofaras1know)inthefam-
ily;Idonotknowwhetherthestemscanalsotwine,buttheadventitiousrootsare
formedon youngstems,inthesecondseason ofgrowthinM.almedae.Mascagnia
vaccmufoliadiffersfromM.almedaeinhaving±persistentlyvelutinousortomentose
stems,stipulesonly0.30.6mm long,leaveswiththe lamina2-4(O) cmlongand
1.2-3(-3.5)cmwide,theovaryglabrousorsparselypilosetosoonglabrate,thestyles
dorsallyapiculateorhookedatapex,andthesamara 1.3-2.3cmwideandhigh.
