The modern era makes our life more complex. This emergence of dynamic com-
plexityeveninhealthcaresectorsmakestheworldtocomeupwithasmartsolution.
Theevolutionofpoint-of-caretestingprovidesmedicaldiagnosiswithinandoutside
thelaboratory.Suchbench-to-bedsidediagnosisadvancespatientmanagementtoa
greatextent.Tocatertotheneeds,asignificantamountoffocushasbeendedicated
to developing an inexpensive, accurate, sensitive point-of-care device at an afford-
ablepricetoreachthecommonpeople.
Rapid detection and point-of-care (POC) diagnostics have become very crucial
especiallyafterthelife-threateningcoronaviruspandemic.Thepandemichasproved
thatdespitetremendousadvancesinmedicalsciencesandtechnology,sorelyweare
lagging in healthcare research. Detection schemes can be realized with an electro-
chemical platform, thanks to its promising advantages like low-to-moderate cost,
high sensitivity, and selectivity with a lower limit of detection (LOD), rapid
response,andeasyintegrationwithmicrofluidicsystems.Avarietyofsignalampli-
ficationmethodsbasedonelectrochemical-chemical-chemical(ECC)redoxcycling
and rolling circle amplification (RCA) have been explored. Integration of these
systems opens a new horizon to fabricate miniaturized devices, disposability, need
forlesssamplevolume,multiplex,andPOCsensingability.
Our motto is to fabricate a label-free, wash-free, and portable electrochemical
biosensorforpoint-of-careapplicationandearlydetectionofdisease.Itwillbeinthe
form of a handheld or bench-top instrument which will accept a sample with very
little or no pre-preparation and can provide a comprehensible result in seconds to
hoursforeasyinterpretation.Next-GenerationNanobiosensorDevicesforPoint-of-
CareDiagnosticswaspreparedforbeginningandexperiencedauthorstoexplorethe
challengesforthedevelopmentofnext-generationpoint-of-caretestplatformusing
nanobiotechnology.
Inthisbook,weaddressthesechallengesforthedevelopmentofapoint-of-care
test platform. The book also describes printed chip-based assays (Lab-on-a-Chip,
Lab-on-a-PCB) for rapid, inexpensive, biomarkers detection in real samples. The
main challenges of point-of-care testing require implementing complex analytical
methodsintolow-costtechnologies.Thisisparticularlytrueforcountrieswithless
developedhealthcare infrastructure.Wash-free, Lab-on-a-Chip,andLab-on-a-PCB
techniques are very simple and innovative for point-of-care device development.

About the Editor
Gorachand Dutta PhD is an Assistant Professor with
theSchool ofMedicalScience and Technology,Indian
Institute of Technology Kharagpur. His research
interestsincludethedesignandcharacterizationofpor-
table biosensors, biodevices, and sensor interfaces for
miniaturized systems and biomedical applications for
point-of-caretesting.HereceivedhisPh.D.inBiosensor
and Electrochemistry from Pusan National University,
South Korea, where he developed different classes of
electrochemicalsensors.Hecompletedhispostdoctoral
fellowshipsintheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineer-
ing, Michigan State University, USA, and the Depart-
ment of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the
University of Bath, UK. He has expertise on label-free
multichannel electrochemical biosensors, electronically
addressablebiosensorarrays,aptamer-andDNA-based
sensorsandsurfacebio-functionalization.
He is recipient of many prestigious awards and
fellowships, such as the prestigious Pusan National
University Research Fellowship, BK-21 Fellowship

Abstract
Overthelastfewdecades,theemergenceandre-emergenceofvariouspathogenic
viruses have significantly impacted human health. The continuous rise in cases
withincreasingmortalityrateshasdriventhechaseforeffectivetreatmentoptions
andearlydiagnosistocombatthisglobalhealthissue.Currently,usedlaboratory
techniquesforvirusdetectionrequirecomplexequipment,trainedpersonnel,and,
mostimportantly,aretime-consuming.Intimesofoutbreaksandepidemicslike
COVID-19 and Ebola, easy-to-use and point-of-care tests, especially for devel-
opingandunderdevelopedcountries,areindispensable.
Thischapterexplicitlydiscussestheavailabilityofthedetectionmethodsfor
varioushumanviralpathogenswiththeirshortcomingsandrecentadvancements
inbiosensors.Withtheongoingimprovementinbiosensors,theseholdimportant
avenues for rapid, sensitive, and scalable devices for viral diagnostic purposes.
Theeffectivenessofpreviouslyknownandcurrentapproaches/devices/methods
thatutilizedifferentprinciplesfordetectionhasalsobeenreviewedhere,withthe
listingofalltheavailabletestsforvarioushumanpathogens.
