Entrepreneurs offer advice at BDA
BDA’s 6th Form Enterprise Society got underway with a
bang this week. The Dennis Potter Theatre played host
to four leading entrepreneurs speaking about the ins
and outs of a life in business.
Students from all year groups came together to hear
the wise and inspiring words of the group of
professionals, comprising: Nick Michaelson of Silver Fox;
Panni Morshedi of Wonga.com; Kate Hammer of Kiln;
and Brynne Herbert of Move.
Mr Michaelson, a very charismatic speaker, engaged
the audience with valuable advice conducive to
success both in business and in life: “Reflect on your
own performance; be responsible for yourself; manage
your expectations and the expectations of those
around you,” he said.
Following the talks, during which students heard about
the entrepreneurs’ collective drive to solve life’s
problems and earn a wholesome living in the process,

SchoolHouse Project: a great start
Our ambitious plan to bring staff and students
together to build a fully functioning timber house on
our White City site is no longer a dream in the
pipeline - it's a reality. The SchoolHouse Project is
underway and things are moving quicker than
expected.
Under the supervision of a skilled and
knowledgeable team of professionals, students have
thrown themselves into the initial stages of the
challenge with ample grit and enthusiasm. Well into
the process of constructing the wall panels for the
house, the group are fast acquiring a skills-set that
will serve them well over the coming months.
Roderick James, the architect leading the project,
has been impressed not only by the efficiency of the
young workforce, but also by their creative input
and conceptual understanding of the plans.
Students have been eagerly offering insights and
opinions that will have a significant bearing on the
finished product. Special mention must be made of

Mr Lawrence: 46 students from Year 10 attended the
annual Institute of Physics Schools Talk at the Royal
Institution in Central London on Thursday.
The talk was titled "Defying Gravity" and encouraged
students to look beyond the "pale blue dot" of Planet

technological innovation and determination have
been able to build machines that can travel in

Ms Hartnett: This week was Banned Books Week, so I
hope everyone had a chance to find something
controversial to read, and thought about why it was
banned – and whether you think that was a good
idea or not!
Even if you didn’t know about it, you may well find
that you’ve read some banned books without
realising, as there are a lot of really popular books
that have made the list of banned books – such as
the Harry Potter series, and James and the Giant
Peach! Following on from Roald Dahl day a couple
of weeks ago, how do you think he would have felt
about his books being banned? Why do you think
they were banned, and do you think it was right that
people wanted to ban his books?
If you haven’t had a chance to read a banned
book yet, and really want to, we still have a display
of banned and challenged books in the main library
that you can come and have a look at. There are
too many books that have been banned over the
years to put in one display though, so ask the
librarians for more if you don’t see one that you like.
There have been so many books that people have
challenged or banned in various countries across
the world, and they span so many different genres
that you’re sure to find something that interests you!

Dark Lord: The Teenage Years
Mr Crowley: It is difficult to explain why this book is
brilliant but it is and you should read it. The main
character, Dirk Lloyd, has the body of a thirteen-
year-old Earth boy. He is in fact the Dark Lord, the
Supreme Ruler of the Darklands, and is a cross
between Voldermort and Sauron. He was defeated
by his sworn enemy, the White Wizard, and
sentenced to Earth. The book chronicles his time as
an Earth child and his attempts to get his powers
back and return home.
The Dark Lord’s time on Earth is really funny, it won
the 2012 Roald Dahl Funny Prize. I would suggest this
book if you liked ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ because it
makes you laugh in the same way. His threats and
insults to his sworn enemies are wildly inventive and
the source of much of the book’s humour.
What I also like about this book is that the author uses
a number of ideas and creatures from more serious
fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings and the Harry an appearance so it’s worth reading even if it’s just
Potter Series. Everything from orcs to dragons make for them!

House rugby: as close as it gets!
BDA’s House Competition took to the field after
school on Tuesday for the much anticipated Touch
Rugby Tournament.
Following a quick briefing of the rules by Mr
Thornton and a few inspirational team talks with the
ever-determined House captains, the games got
underway.
Straight from the off Ephesians and Galatians
looked very strong. A combination of clinical
passing, well organised defensive lines and incisive
running secured a solid start for both teams.
After a round-robin of thrilling encounters, Ephesians
and Galatians finished on equal points and it was
left to Mr Crawford to weigh up the number of tries
scored by each team before a victor could be
crowned.
Congratulations to Ephesians, who emerged the
overall champions. Galatians came second,
Corinthians third, Romans fourth, Colossians fifth
and Philippians sixth.
