With the advent of nanotechnology, the properties offered by nano-sized parti-
cles in various engineering applications have revolutionized the area of material
science. Furthermore, due to the use of nanomaterials in various engineering
components, particularly in moving parts, it is imperative to understand the
behaviour of these nanomaterials under sliding conditions. Therefore, an aug-
mented approach of nanotechnology and tribology has been addressed in this

Preface
Tribology, being a phenomenon of interacting surfaces and an interdisci-
plinary field, finds applications in different areas. The properties offered
by nano-sized particles in various engineering components have revolution-
ized the area of material science. The results obtained from different find-
ings suggest that there is a lot of improvement in the tribological properties
with the use of nanomaterials. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the
behaviour of these nanomaterials under sliding conditions at nano-scale.
Furthermore, owing to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, there is a
great scope in nanotechnology with regard to tribology.
In this context, some of the initiatives taken by tribologists include the
use of nanomaterials in lubricating oils, use of nano-additives in green
lubricants, nano-additives as self-lubricating materials, surface textur-
ing at nano-scale, use of nanocoatings for improved surface character-
istics, synergetic effects of nanomaterials and the use of nanomaterials
for biomedical applications. All these approaches have led to substantial
improvements in the tribological behaviour of different materials under
different operating conditions. Keeping in view these aspects, in this
book, an attempt has been made to address the role of nanotechnology in
the field of tribology.
The main aim of this book is to highlight the contribution of nanomateri-
als in the field of tribology. This book covers major aspects of tribology of
nanomaterials, and its current status and future directions. It presents the
recent advancement on the topics related to tribology of nanolubricants,
and special topics related to nanomaterial coatings and nano-biotribology.
The book starts with chapters focused on introduction to nanotechnology
and its role in the field of tribology followed by the role of nanomaterials in
metal matrix composites and polymer composites. Furthermore, chapters
also cover topics related to liquid lubrication and the importance of differ-
ent nano-additives in lubricating oils. The later part of the book includes
chapters on nanomaterial coatings for various applications and the role of
surface texturing in tribology followed by a chapter focused on the role of
nanotechnology in biotribology.
