Abstract
Two current major trends are that todays systems and processes are
characterized by an increasing connectivity and that innovations and
development take place in increasingly shorter cycles. The increasing
connectivityofsystemsandprocessesleadstoanincreasingcomplexity
duetotherapidlyincreasingnumberofpossiblestatesandinteractions.
The behavior of such complex systems is not determined by a single
component, butresultsfromtheinteractionsofallsystemcomponents.
Typical examples include highly interconnected technical systems as
well as social systems.
The development, analysis and evaluation of such complex sys-
tems requires more and more the use of modeling and simulation,
as it is often impossible to do otherwise. To represent such complex
systems, microscopic modeling approaches like agent-based model-
ing and simulation are often used. Despite widespread use in many
application areas, the foundations of agent-based modeling and sim-
ulation are much less profound than in other established modeling
paradigms. This causes many difficulties: Efficient model develop-
ment is hampered, verification and validation activities are difficult to
perform and evaluation of reusability of model components is hardly
possible.
Withspecialemphasisonagent-basedmodelingandsimulation,this
thesis aims at two goals. Firstly, improving effectivity and efficiency
of model development and secondly, improving effectivity of model
execution.
The first contribution of this thesis is the definition of a General
Reference Model for Agent-based Modeling and Simulation (GRAMS).
This reference model defines the components and structure of agent-
based models as well as constraints for the simulation of such models.
VIII Abstract
The GRAMS reference model provides a framework which guides
model developers in creating problem-specific models and increases
comparability of agent-based models. As the complexity of systems
under investigation increases, collaborative model development and
component-based modeling approaches are increasingly important.
By providing a common framework, the GRAMS reference model
provides a valuable basis towards a common understanding of agent-
based modeling and simulation which is the necessary prerequisite for
effective and efficient model development.
The second contribution of this thesis addresses the effectivity of
model execution. In general, the continuously growing computing
power provided by hardware and the portion effectively used by soft-
ware are diverging. Yet, in order to analyze increasingly complex
systems and to execute large-scale agent-based models, the increase in
availablecomputingpowerhastobeexploited. TheGRAMSreference
model distinguishes strictly between a simulation model and a simu-
lation engine executing the model. Following this distinction, firstly
various approaches are presented for partitioning agent-based mod-
els. Secondly, parallel execution of simulation engines is considered
in a multi-level approach taking into account parallel execution on
processor-, node- and cluster-level. By strictly distinguishing between
simulation model and simulation engine, the GRAMS reference model
provides the necessary foundation for executing a simulation model
on different simulation engines. This allows each simulation engine
to exploit a specific hardware platform when executing a simulation
model.
To evaluate and demonstrate the applicability of the GRAMS
reference model an example implementation is developed and three
case studies are performed. The results and experiences from the case
studies show that the GRAMS reference model serves very well as a
guideline for developing agent-based simulation models of complex
systems. Potentialspeedupthroughparallelexecutionisdemonstrated
by using a benchmark model.
Zusammenfassung
Zwei aktuelle Trends sind die zunehmende Vernetzung von Syste-
men und Prozessen sowie die ku¨rzeren Zeitabst¨ande fu¨r Innovationen
und Entwicklungen. Die zunehmende Vernetzung von Systemen und
Prozessen fu¨hrt aufgrund der rasant wachsenden Anzahl m¨oglicher
Zust¨ande und Interaktionen zu einer zunehmenden Komplexit¨at. Das
Gesamtverhalten eines solchen komplexen Systems wird nicht durch
eine einzelne Komponente bestimmt, sondern ergibt sich erst aus dem
Zusammenspiel aller Komponenten des Systems. Typische Beispiele
sind u.a. vernetzte technische Systeme ebenso wie soziale Netzwerke.
Die Entwicklung, Analyse und Bewertung derartiger komplexer
Systeme erfordert zunehmend den Einsatz von Modellbildung und
Simulation. Fu¨r die Modellierung derartiger Systeme werden viel-
fach mikroskopische Modellierungsans¨atze, wie die agentenbasierte
Modellbildung und Simulation, eingesetzt. Trotz weiter Verbreitung
in vielf¨altigen Anwendungsbereichen sind die Grundlagen der agen-
tenbasierten Modellbildung und Simulation verh¨altnism¨aßig schwach
ausgepr¨agt im Vergleich zu anderen etablierten Modellierungsparadig-
men. Dies behindert eine effiziente Modellentwicklung, erschwert die
VerifikationundValidierungderartigerModelleundverhindertoftmals
eine Beurteilung der Wiederverwendbarkeit von Modellkomponenten.
Mit Fokus auf die agentenbasierte Modellbildung und Simulation
verfolgt diese Arbeit zwei Ziele: Zum einen die Verbesserung der Ef-
fektivit¨at und Effizienz bei der Modellentwicklung, sowie andererseits
die Verbesserung der Effektivit¨at bei der Modellausfu¨hrung.
Der erste Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt in der Definition eines Re-
ferenzmodells,demGeneral Reference Model for Agent-based Modeling
and Simulation (GRAMS), welches agentenbasierte Modelle auf kon-
zeptueller Ebene definiert und eine umfassende Beschreibung der Dy-

namik agentenbasierter Modelle liefert. Das GRAMS-Referenzmodell
stellt ein Rahmenwerk dar, das Modellentwickler bei der Erstellung
problemspezifischer Modelle unterstu¨tzt und eine h¨ohere Vergleich-
barkeit von Modellen erm¨oglicht. Des Weiteren erh¨oht das GRAMS-
ReferenzmodelldasgemeinsameVerst¨andnisallerBeteiligtenaneinem
Modellierungsprojekt. Bedingt durch die zunehmende Komplexit¨at
der abzubildenden Systeme, nimmt die Bedeutung kollaborativer
Modellentwicklung zu. Die Bereitstellung grundlegender Definitio-
nen der agentenbasierten Modellbildung und Simulation durch das
GRAMS-ReferenzmodellisteinSchrittinRichtungeinesgemeinsamen
Verst¨andnisses und bildet die Basis fu¨r eine effektive und effiziente
Modellentwicklung.
Der zweite Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt auf einer effektiven Mo-
dellausfu¨hrung. Um zunehmend komplexere Systeme zu analysieren
und umfangreiche Modelle auszufu¨hren, mu¨ssen Performancesteige-
rungen auf Hardwareseite, u.a. durch die zunehmende Verbreitung
von Multi-Core-Prozessoren, m¨oglichst optimal ausgenutzt werden.
HierzuunterscheidetdasGRAMS-ReferenzmodellzwischendemSimu-
lationsmodell als solchem und der eigentlichen Simulationsumgebung,
welche das Modell ausfu¨hrt. Dieser Unterscheidung folgend werden
einerseits verschiedene Ans¨atze zur Partitionierung des agentenba-
sierten Modells vorgestellt, ebenso wie andererseits ein ganzheitlicher
Ansatz zur Parallelisierung der Ausfu¨hrung der Simulationsumgebung.
Ganzheitlich bedeutet hierbei, dass die Parallelisierung auf mehreren
Ebenen (Prozessor, Rechner, Systemverbund) betrachtet wird. Das
GRAMS-Referenzmodell ist hierbei die Grundlage, um agentenbasier-
te Modelle transparent auf unterschiedlichen Simulationsumgebungen
und unterschiedlichen Hardwareplattformen auszufu¨hren, wobei jede
Simulationsumgebung die zur Verfu¨gung stehende Hardware optimal
ausnutzen kann.
Anhand einer Referenzimplementierung und mehrerer Fallstudien
wird die praktische Anwendbarkeit der entwickelten L¨osungsans¨atze
demonstriert.
