About the Special Issue Editors
HafzullahAksoyreceivedaBA(1990)incivilengineeringandamaster’sdegree(1993)andPhD
degree (1998) in hydraulics and water resources from Istanbul Technical University, Turkey. He
workedinGermanyandtheUSAduringhispost-doctoralstudies.Hewasappointedasanassistant
professorin2002andanassociateprofessorin2003atIstanbulTechnicalUniversity. Hespentone
year(2009)inGermanyasanAlexandervonHumboldtguestresearcher.Currently,heisaprofessor
of hydrology and water resources in the Hydraulics Unit of the Civil Engineering Department at
IstanbulTechnicalUniversity. Hisresearchtopicsrangefromstatisticalmethodstoprocess-based
modelingtechniquesforrainfall-runoff-sedimenttransportinhydrologicalwatershedsandrivers.
He was awarded the 2006 Best Paper and 2009 Best Discussion Awards of the ASCE Journal of
HydrologicEngineeringandthe2011EngineeringIncentiveAwardoftheScientificandTechnological
Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). Prof. Aksoy is the universities’ representative to the National
Hydrology Commission of Turkey and has served as vice president (2007–2011), president elect
(2011–2013),president(2013–2017),andpastpresident(2017–2019)ofInternationalCommissionof
SurfaceWater(ICSW),InternationalAssociationofHydrologicalSciences(IAHS).Hewasrecently
awardedaFulbrightVisitingResearcherScholarship.
GilMahe´ receivedaBA(1986)ingeologyandgeophysicsfromParisXIUniversityandamaster’s
degree (1987) in hydrology. He then studied hydrology, meteorology, climate, and oceanography
withtheORSTOMInstitute(nowIRD,ResearchInstituteforDevelopingCountries)inFranceand
Senegal to obtain a PhD from Paris XI University in 1992. In 1993, his PhD received the French
nationalprizeof“GeorgesHachette”fromtheSocie´te´deGe´ographieofParis. Heisnowaresearch
directoratIRD.HespentfiveyearsinMaliworkingonthehydroclimatologyandsedimenttransport
oftheNigerRiver.HethenspentoneyearintheClimaticResearchUnitofUniversityofEastAnglia
inNorwich,UK,workingonthehydrologicalmodelingandimpactofclimatechangeontheNiger
River.HewentbacktoWestAfricaforfourmoreyears,workinginBurkinaFasoattheInternational
SchoolofEngineersontheSahelparadox:lessrainfallandmorerunoff.Hethendevelopedresearch
inMaghrebontheimpactofclimateandhumanactivitiesonriverregimesandsedimenttransport,
withamorerecentfocusontheimpactofdamsonsedimenttransporttothesea. Heiscurrently
the president of the International Commission of Surface Water (ICSW), International Association
of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS). He is the chair of the International Committee of the FRIEND
programofUNESCO(InternationalHydrologicalProgram)andisresponsiblefortheMediterranean
FRIENDgroup. HeisthecoordinatoroftheFrenchresearchprogramSICMEDoftheMISTRALS
CNRS/INSUprogramforthestudyoftheMediterraneanenvironment.
MohamedMeddireceivedhisPhDfromtheUniversityofStrasbourginFrance. Heisaprofessor
ofhydrologyandascientificmanagerofdoctoraltrainingattheNationalHighSchoolofHydraulics
ofBlida. Prof. Meddiisamemberoftheeditorialboardofseveraljournals. Hisresearchfocuses
on hydrology and water science, and he has written more than 50 publications. Prof. Meddi
has organized several international conferences in the field of water science. In addition, he is a
member of the National Commission for the implementation of the PNR topics. Prof. Meddi is
responsibleforseveralnationalresearchandinternationalprograms. Currently,heisreviewerfor
severalscientificjournals.HeisamemberoftheMEDFRIEND(oneoftheeightFRIENDprogramsof

theInternationalHydrologicalProgramofUNESCO).Mostrecently,hewasamemberoftheWASER
(WorldAssociationforSedimentationandErosionResearch)Council.

Preface to “Modeling and Practice of Erosion and
Sediment Transport under Change”
Thisbooktitled“ModelingandPracticeofErosionandSedimentTransportunderChange”is
composedoffivekeywords.Twooutofthefivekeywords—“erosion”and“sedimenttransport”—are
relatedtoprocesses. Theyaretwoconsecutiveprocesses;one,theformer,comesaftertheother,the
latter.Sedimentparticlesarefirstdetachedfromtheiroriginallocationbyerosionundertheeffectof
differentagents,suchaswind,rainfall,andrunoff,andarethentransported.Anothertwokeywords
are“modeling”and“practice”,whicharemutuallylinked—bothbasedoneachother.Goodpractice
isnotpossiblewithoutatheoreticallywell-establishedmodelnorismodelingvaluablewhenitisnot
applicabletopractice. Finally,thecrucialkeyword,“change”,isakindofmirrortothefutureofthe
abovefourkeywords.Erosionandsedimentprocessesshouldbemodeledandpracticedconsidering
hydrologicalconditionsundercontinuouschange. “Change”isthemostchallenginganduncertain
keywordofthebooktitle, asitisbornnotonlyofnaturalreasonsbutalsoduetoanthropogenic
disturbances.Itisacommonbeliefoftheeditorsthatallthepapersinthisbookshouldbeconsidered
acontributiontoaddressingtheerosionandsedimenttransportprobleminhydrologicalwatersheds
atdifferentscalesofspaceandtimeandalsounderanykindofchange. Thisbookisexpectedto
attracttheinterestofhydrologists,waterresourcesresearchers,practitioners,anddecisionmakers.
