General preface
Thetheoreticalfocusofthisseriesisontheinterfacesbetweensubcomponentsofthe
humangrammaticalsystemandthecloselyrelatedareaoftheinterfacesbetweenthe
different subdisciplines of linguistics. The notion of ‘interface’ has become central
in grammatical theory (for instance, in Chomsky’s Minimalist Program) and in
linguisticpractice:workontheinterfacesbetweensyntaxandsemantics,syntaxand
morphology, phonology and phonetics, etc., has led to a deeper understanding of
particularlinguisticphenomenaandofthearchitectureofthelinguisticcomponent
ofthemind/brain.
The series covers interfaces between core components of grammar, includ-
ing syntax/morphology, syntax/semantics, syntax/phonology, syntax/pragmatics,
morphology/phonology,phonology/phonetics,phonetics/speechprocessing,seman-
tics/pragmatics,andintonation/discoursestructure,aswellasissuesinthewaythat
thesystemsofgrammarinvolvingtheseinterfaceareasareacquiredanddeployedin
use(includinglanguageacquisition,languagedysfunction,andlanguageprocessing).
Itdemonstrates,wehope,thatproperunderstandingsofparticularlinguisticphenom-
ena,languages,languagegroups,orinter-languagevariationsallrequirereferenceto
interfaces.
Theseriesisopentoworkbylinguistsofalltheoreticalpersuasionsandschoolsof
thought.Amainrequirementisthatauthorsshouldwritesoastobeunderstoodby
colleaguesinrelatedsubfieldsoflinguisticsandbyscholarsincognatedisciplines.
Humanlanguage,allowingustoconsidercircumstancesthatgobeyondtheactual.
The philosophical tradition typically examines modality as a sentence level phe-
nomenon. In this volume, the editors take a more linguistic tack, using the layers
ofsententialandnominalstructurediscoveredinsyntactic(especiallycartographic)
investigationascontoursinanexplorationofmodalityandspreadingtheempirical
domainwellbeyondEuropeanlanguages.Thisopensupquestionsofwhichkindsof
modalmeaningsareavailableatdifferentlevelsofsyntacticstructureandthevarious
contributionscollectedhereshowhowsyntaxspecializestheexpressionofmodality
inintriguinglysimilarwaysacrossunrelatedlanguages.Asawhole,thebookopens
upanewresearchprogrammebringingtheworkofsyntacticians,semanticists,and
philosophersclosertogetherinacrucialareaoflinguisticresearch.
