Althoughthechemicalindustrytodaystillworkswithfossilrawmaterialssuchas
petrol and natural gas, even this sector will have a stronger focus on the use of
renewablefeedstock:biomassfromplants.Aparticularadvantage ofbiorefineries
willbeeffectiveinthisdevelopment forexploitingbiomassperfectly:thegenera-
tion of a high number of products and material for further processing in the
chemicalindustry.Thedevelopmentofmicrobialprocessesbothforthe digestion
ofbiomassandforthesynthesisofplatformchemicalsandsecondaryproductsisan
importantobjectofresearchinthiscontext.
