Computersnowformanintegralpartofmostreal-timecontrolsystems.Withtheadventofthe
microprocessorsandmicrocontrollersinthelastfewdecadestheuseofcomputersincontrol
applicationshasbeenevergrowing.Microcontrollersaresingle-chipcomputerswhichcanbe
usedtocontrolreal-timesystems.Suchcontrollersarealsoreferredtoasembeddedreal-time
computers.Thesedevicesarelow-cost,single-chipandeasytoprogram.Microcontrollershave
traditionallybeenprogrammedusingtheassemblylanguageofthetargetprocessor.Itisnow
possibletoprogramthesedevicesusinghigh-levellanguagessuchasBASIC,PASCAL,orC.
Asaresultofthis,verycomplexcontrolalgorithmscanbedevelopedandimplementedonthe
microcontrollers.
Thisbookisaboutthetheoryandpracticeofmicrocontrollerbasedautomaticcontrolsystems
engineering.Apreviousknowledgeofmicrocontrollerhardwareorsoftwareisnotrequired,
butthereaderwillfinditusefultohavesomeknowledgeofacomputerprogramminglanguage.
Chapter1ofthebookpresentsabriefintroductiontothecontrolsystemsandtheelementsof
computerbasedcontrolsystems.Somepreviousknowledgeofthetheoryofcontinuous-time
controlsystemsishelpfulinunderstandingthismaterial.
Chapter2isaboutsystemmodelling.Modellingadynamicsystemisthestartingpointin
controlengineering.Modelsofvariousmechanical,electrical,andfluidsystemsareintroduced

Chapter3isdevotedtothepopularPICmicrocontrollerfamilywhichisdescribedandused
inthisbook.ThePICfamilyisoneofthemostwidelyusedmicrocontrollersincommercialand
