how do theyreach thatdestinationwithout
the rightdirection and supporttoday.

toprovide thatdirection and support.
Thegoal ofthe Mayor's Youth
Leadership Corps is toprovide the
opportunities and experiencesthatwill
promote and encouragethenextgeneration
ofBoston's leaders.

The Mayor'sYouth
Leadership Corpswill
be a group ofhardworking
youngpeople from all of
Boston's neighborhoods.
Chosen aftertheir
4, sophomoreyearofhigh
school, corpsmembers
will be given a yeartheywill never forget
and a yearthey can build on fortherestof
theirlives.
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Theprogram's field experiences, cur-
riculum and activitieswill begin during

students' junioryear after school hours, on
weekends and duringvacationperiods.
Attheend ofthe school year, members
will beplaced in internships in some ofthe
mostinteresting andproductive summerjobs
available in the City.
Field Experiences Youngpeople
will meetthepeoplewho are theleaders of
today. Theywill learn
from academic, govern-
mentofficials, business
people andpeople in the
arts, who will talkabout
notjustaboutwho they
are andwhattheydo
today, buthowtheygotthere andwhat it
takesto lead and succeed.
Tripswill range from visits toWashing-
ton, D.C. andmeetingswith membersof
Congressto spendingtimewith ChiefExecu-
tive Officers in Boston officetowers. There
will also be opportunitiesto attend cultural
and sports events and to meetperforming art-
ists and athletes.

Curriculum Youngpeopleselected
forthisprogramwill learn aboutthehistory
ofBoston and allofitsneighborhoods andthe
contributions ofvarious immigrant andethnic
groups. Theywill studythechallenges and
problemsfacingBoston, itsneighborhoods

and itspeople especiallyitsyoungpeople
today.
Activities Members ofthecorpswill
beexpectedtoworkhard, buttheywill also

begiventhe chanceto havefun. rangeof
activitieswill beprovided, both to giveyoung
people a chanceto develop leadership and
communication skills, and a chanceto enjoy
themselvesthrough activitieslikeWhitewater
rafting and campingexpeditions.
Internships After spendingthe aca-
demicyearin theprogram, corps members
will orientthenextyear'sgroup, then be
placed in summerinternshippositionsrelated
totheir interests and career aspirations.
Community Service An important
emphasisofthe programwill be an individ-
ual'sresponsibility to help others, to serve, to
give somethingback. Notonlywill corps
memberslearn theproblemsfaced bythe
City, itsneighborhoods and
people, theywill beexpected

Leadership &Working Together
Throughouttheprogram, the quality of
leadershipwill be stressed, explored and
encouraged.
Youngpeoplewill betaughttheimpor-
tanceofindividual responsibility, discipline,
selfrespect and respectforothers aswell asthe
valueofhardwork.
Anemphasiswill also beplacedon
bringingtheseyoungpeopletogetheras a
group, and on encouragingmembersto form
friendshipswith one anotherand succeeding

groups creatingaleadership network forthe
CityofBostoninthe future.
Support Youngpeoplechosenforthe
Mayor'sYouth Leadership Corpswill begiven
alltheencouragement and assistanceneces-
saryto takepartinthisprogram.
In additionto receivinga salaryfrom
theirsummerinternships, corpsmemberswill
receive a small stipendduringthe schoolyear
and alump sum scholarshipuponcompletion
oftheprogram.
Memberswillbeprovidedwith tutoring,
and academicandcareercounselingtohelp
themmakedecisionsforthefuture. Amentor-
ingprograminvolvingboth
college studentsand adults
willbeestablished.

Massachusetts.

Selection Corpsmemberswill be
nominated byprincipals, teachers, commu-
nity, business and religiousleaders, parents
andpeers fortheleadership qualitiesthey have
alreadybegun to show. Selectionwill bebased
onconduct, characterand contributionsto
community, asmuch as achievements in aca-
demicsorother areas.
