THE THEME
SPANISH PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE AND
PHENOMENOLOGY
Here for the first time contemporary Spanish philosophy is brought to
the world forum of phenomenology. What merits attention in particular
here is the Spanish philosophy of life as represented by Ortega y
Gasset, Miguel du Unamuno, Xavier Zubiri, and Maria Zambrano. The
question arises: on what account could these thinkers be brought into a
dialogue with Husserlian phenomenology? The question of whether
these thinkers felt the influence of Husserl or of phenomenology at
large, or of whether, for instance, Ortega is or is not a phenomenologist
are from the systematic philosophical point of view irrelevant. None of
these thinkers avowedly expressed a commitment to phenomenology.
As for Ortega, he vehemently rejects Husserl's basic assumptions and
proclaims his own philosophy of life as a new beginning. Of course, it
may be said on the one hand, in general, that through the history of
philosophy all great philosophers have used direct intuition to establish
the core of their thought. On the other hand, at certain periods of
culture some ideas are just "in the air" and inspire several thinkers
without there being a direct influence from one to the other. As it
developed, the issue upon which Spanish philosophy and phenomenol
ogy meet is precisely LIFE itself.
As a matter of fact, the third phase of phenomenology, the move
ment in which the entire phenomenological enterprise has been taken
up again and re-deployed on a field far more vast than that upon which
classical phenomenology worked, a project initiated and being carried
out by the philosophers clustered in and around The World Institute
for Advanced Phenomenological Research and Learning, received its
impetus from the discovery that the great question underlying all
phenomenological endeavor has to be the question of LIFE.
We here explore the field which our formulation of this question
marks out through interdisciplinary dialogue and through dialogues
with philosophies other than phenomenology as such. What could be
more appropriate and fascinating than to enter into a dialogue with
the prominent Spanish thinkers who have themselves addressed the
question of life?

x THE THEME
In this volume we gather the fruits of the first International Phe
nomenology Conference in Spain. There was begun a dialogue that
promises to deepen and to yield significant insights and intuitions for
the enrichment of not only our own research program but of philosophy
at large.
