TONY MARTIN established himself as the leading scholar
of the Garvey Movement with his Race First: The
Ideological and Organizational Struggles of Marcus
Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association
(1976). He followed this up with The Pan-African Con-
nection (1983). He also co-authored Rare Afro-
Americana: A Reconstruction of the Adger Library
(1981).
Martin is professor and chairman of the Black Studies
Department at Wellesley College, Massachusetts. He did
his MLA. and Ph.D. inhistory at Michigan State University
and the B.Sc. in economics at the University of Hull,
England. In 1965 he qualified as a barrister-at-law at
Gray’s Inn, London. He has taught at the University of
Michigan - Flint, the Cipriani Labor College (Trinidad)
and St. Mary’s College (Trinidad). He has been visiting
