Preface
Our understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic inflammatory
diseases is tightly linked to understanding the sequential steps and
molecular mechanisms involved in the trafficking of leukocytes from
the circulation into specific tissues in health and disease. We have
known for quite some time that the first step of leukocyte extravasa
tion, the rolling of leukocytes, is primarily mediated by the interac
tions of selectins and their· ligands. More recently there has been

growing evidence for the crucial role that fucosyltransferases play in
this process. We thus wanted to organize a workshop that would pro
vide a forum for many highly recognized scientists to present and
discuss recent developments and breakthroughs in this exciting and
ever-growing research field. For this 44th ESRF Workshop on
"Leukocyte Trafficking: The Role of Fucosyltransferases and Selec
tins" held in Berlin from 30 October to 1 November, 2002, we were
successful in bringing together a group of international scientists
who are leaders in their field. We are grateful for their excellent con
tributions to this workshop, which are summarized in these proceed
ings. The organizers hope that this publication will be a valuable
source for scientists and clinicians alike, since this book provides an
in-depth overview of the mechanisms of leukocyte trafficking and
also discusses options for the pharmacological intervention to treat
inflammatory diseases.
