2.6 Orthography
EvenkiiswrittenintheRussianCyrillicalphabetwiththeadditionoftheletter^ (forthe
velarnasalconsonant).Vocaliclengthisnotmarkedinthewrittenlanguage(althoughitis
usually marked in linguistic transcriptions). If/a, a:, a, a:, o, o:, u, u:/follow the alveo-
palatals ^,ji,j/, the vowels are written with Cyrillic letters «, e, 6, k) to indicate the
palatalization ofthe precedingconsonant (which have no Cyrillic correspondents). For
example, a^JIoBolo] *stone\hio gu:] *house'. The phoneme/e:/iswritten with oneof
twoletters:theletter3isusedword-initiallyandafter/t/and/d/,andthelettereelsewhere.
Thephonemes/i,i:/arewrittenwiththeletterbiwhentheyfollow/t/and/d/andinallother
positions are written h. The bilabial fricative p is written b. Phonemic variants are not
usuallymarkedintheregularorthography.
