INTRODUCTION
The district covered by the two registers of Brindle and Samles-
fcury, now presented, forms roughly a triangle between the three
towns of Preston, Blackburn, and Chorley; Brindle, lying almost
exactlyin the centre of the area, and Samlesbury towards the north
on the high road from Preston to Blackburn, beingabout three miles
from the former, and five miles from the latter. It was originally
intended to include the registers of Brownedge, which adjoins on
the west, but it would have made the volume too bulky. The
Brindle registers will be found to be amongst the most interesting
of anyyet publishedbytheSociety. Commencingin 1721-2, whichis
about 50 years earlier than the majority of Lancashire registers,
there are not only a large number of baptismal entries for each
year, but also lists of marriages and burials from the same early
date, whichis most unusual, and ofgreat importance to the genealo
gist. There are also lists of conversions which is an uncommon
feature, and of confraternities and confirmations. The amount of
familyinformation given in the burials 1722-1766 when the registers
were kept by Dom William Placid Naylor, O.S.B., is quite unique,
and makes one regret that other missioners did not keep their
records in the same interesting way.
It is only right that a tribute should here be paid to the memory
of the late Mr Joseph Gillow, to whom the Societyowes such a debt
of gratitude. Without an equal in the post-reformation history
of Catholicity in this country, he was, of course, especially at home
when tracing the fortunes of Catholic families in his own county of
Lancashire, very few of the older families of any class not having
been the subject of his most interesting notes in the various pub
lications of the Society, and particularly in Volumes IV (Burghleys
map of Lancashire), VI (Recusants under Charles II), and the four
volumes of Lancashire registers.
Mr Gillow had promised to write the historical notes for both of
the missions now printed, and to annotatethe entries, but, owing to
the unusual time taken in getting this volume through the press,
he was barely able to complete Brindle before his last illness over
tookhim, andwe areleft to mourn one who has done yeoman service
in the cause of Catholic research, and whose loss, even yet, is hardly
realised. R.I.P.
After the death of Mr Gillow, Dom Joseph Edward Smith,
O.S.B., ofAmpleforthAbbey, who hadalreadyverykindlycorrected
all the proofs from the originals, again came to the rescue of the
Society, undertaking at short notice to write the historical notes for
Samlesbury, and the Societyis very greatly indebted to him for the
able way in which he has carried out this task. j p SMITH.
P.S. Re the note on page 305, attention may be called to the
Samlesbury register, in which, out of thirteen baptismal entries of
the Hubberstey family (pp. 313-329) no less than fifteen different
spellingsareused. The same familyappearsin the Brindle registers,
but Dom Placid Naylor always gives it as Huberche.

Brindle
is a township and parish in the hundred of Leyland, co. Lancaster,
sevenmilessouth-westofBlackburnandsixmilessouth-eastofPreston.
ItliestothesouthofWalton-le-Dale,andoneveryothersideisbounded
by the parish of Leyland, to which it originally belonged. It appears
to have derived its name from the British Bryn, a spring, with the
suffix hull, orhill. Throughthemarriage of Joan, daughterandheiress
of Sir Peter de Bryn, of Brynhill, the manor of Brindle, as well as that
of Bryn and~,Ashton-in-Makerneld, in the parish of Winwick, in the
hundred of West Derby, passedtoherhusband, William Gerard, whose
father and namesake died at Eaton Hall in 1352, and since that period
the principal seat of the family, now represented by Lord Gerard, has
been at Bryn, subsequentlyre-named Garswood. TheGerardsretained
the lordship of Brindle till the middle of the i8th century, when it
passed by purchase into the family of Cavendish, and in 1819 Lord
George Cavendish, afterwards Earl of Burlington, became lord, and
theDukesofDevonshirehavesinceheldthepresentationtotherectory.
Descendants of the Gerards, usually spelling their name Gerrard, are
very numerous in the locality. Butbefore proceeding with thehistory
of Brindle, a word must be said about the adjoiningtownship of
Hoghton.
Dominating Brindle, in the parish of Leyland, on the crest of the
hill, stands Hoghton Tower, the lordly seat of the Hoghtons, whose
present representative, Sir James de Hoghton, Bart., resides in the
castle (Haydock Papers; C.R.S. iii). During the earlier portion of the
reign of Elizabeth it was a centre of catholicity, and at the re-opening
of the Tower after the extensive additions and alterations effected
between 1563 and1565 byits mostdistinguishedlord,Thomas Hoghton,
subsequently an exile for his Blessed Conscience, his great friend,
William Allen, later cardinal, Vivian Haydock, lord of Cottam and
finally priest and exile, besides many other notable priests and
confessors, were present at the celebrations in the domestic chapel,
to which they were summoned by the ancient bell brought from the
suppressed chantry of Assheton-under-Lyne, bearing the inscription
Benedicta sit sancta Trinitas. It was a relic of the lord of Hoghtons
maternalancestors,hismotherhavingbeentheco-heiressofSirThomas
Assheton and wife of Sir Richard Hoghton. Within four years the
government of Elizabeth, alarmed bysuch manifestations of the abso
lute refusal of Lancashire folk to embrace the new religion, summoned
manyofthe leadinggentryto appearbefore an ecclesiasticalinquisition
at Lathom,increased the severityofthe penal laws,imprisoned notable
adherents of the ancient faith, and necessitated the lord of Hoghtons

flight into exile at Antwerp. He died at Liege in 1580, at the age of
63,andwasburiedinthechurchofSt.Gervaisunderahandsomemonu
ment surmounted by the Hoghton arms, quartered with those of
Assheton, with the appropriate motto of the family Malgre le Tort.
in the concluding words of the Hoghton ballad, entitled " The Blessed
Conscience,"attributedtotheexilespersonalfriend,RichardVerstegan
" Hys life a myrour was to all,
Hys death wythout offence
;
Confessor,then,lett us hym call,
O
blessed conscyence ! "
His wife was Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Gerard, of Bryn, and
thushe was inseparably connected with Brindle. She seems, however,
to have predeceased him, and meanwhile the Tower was administered
by the exiles faithful brother, to whom in the ballad he bids
"Fayr wel, my broder Richard trewe,
Whom
I dyd love soe wel"
and under his administration holy sacrifice continued in the chapel.
His daughter, Jane, became the wife of James Bradshaigh, of Haigh
Hall, whose descendant, when a minor, was taken possession of by
the lord-lieutenant of the county, and brought up a protestant, his
representative at the present day being the Earl of Crawford and
Balcarres, of Haigh Hall.
Immediately after the exiles death, Hoghton Tower was visited at
Eastertide, 1581, by Blessed Edmund Campion, the famous Jesuit
martyr, who also stayed with Sir John Southworth at Samlesbury
Hall and the Talbots at Salesbury Hall (Simpson, Edm. Campion,
ed. 1867, p. 188), and this venerable priest preached in the ancient
chapel attached to the castle with such wonderful fire and eloquence
that many leading gentry of the county flocked to hear him. In
the words of "A Songe of the Blessed martire ffather Campion of the
Societie of Jesus " (John Brereley, Priest, MSS., apud me ; Pollen, Acts
of English Martyrs, 29)
"The Tower had never man
that stood in more defense,
More farre from foile, more full of fayth
or more sensere of sence."
The excitement caused by the famous Jesuits preaching did not
escape the notice of the Queens Council. Catholic prisoners were
usedwithgreaterseverity, and searches of greaterstrictnesswere made
for those not apprehended. A few months later Campion was arrested,
and the Earl of Derby apprehended Sir John Southworth, as well as
the late exiles brother, Richard Hoghton, still in charge of the Tower,
which was raided and a number of papers seized. The latter was
examined relative to the great Jesuits visit with Bro. Ralph Emerson,
his attendant. Though Mr. Hoghton survived this imprisonment, he
was pursued with relentless persecution to the end of his long life.
AfterThomasHoghtonsdeath, theestatepassedtohis nextbrother,
Alexander, of Lea Hall, who died in 1581 before he took possession
of the Tower, upon which his half-brother, Thomas Hoghton the
younger, succeeded to the family inheritance. The latter was slain
in 1589 at The Lea, by the Baron of Newton, frequently called Baron
of Walton-le-Dale, after which his son, Sir Richard Hoghton, then
aboy, was, attheinstigation ofthe lord-lieutenantofthecounty, given
in ward to Sir Gilbert Gerard, of Gerard s Bromley, co. Stafford, father
