This is ironic because the Bible envisages an open heaven—not a closed book!—for Jesus’ followers.</p><p>In this book, we’d like to do our small part to set people free from what you might call the “Babylonian captivity” when it comes to the Bible’s teaching about the future. The original Babylonian captivity, of course, was Israel’s exile in Babylon two and a half millennia ago. More recently, the term gained currency for the period preceding the Reformation when the papacy moved from Rome to Avignon in southern France as a sign of the church’s growing corruption.</p><p>During both periods, God’s people were in exile, whether literally or figuratively, in the sense that they were essentially shut out from what God had for them. Similarly, today many Christians are bewildered by the scholarly jargon and complicated end-time scenarios batted about by technical experts. Yet is reality truly as complicated? We don’t think so. Once you’ve read this book, we hope you’ll agree that knowing what the future holds for Christians is within our reach (though, of course, mysteries remain).</p><p>It is our hope that <span>Jesus and the Future</span> will equip you to cut through the maze of end-time teaching and to live your life in view of Jesus’ teaching on the future. Jesus’ teaching about the future is both simpler and more profound than many people realize. It is simple enough to be grasped by every Christian and it is profound enough to change your life. Living in the light of his coming is what the early Christians did. We believe that our prospect and expectation of the future can decisively shape our priorities, decisions, and conception of our mission. Let’s see if with God’s help we can bring greater clarity into this crucial area of our lives.</p>
