The Cambridge Imperial and Post-Colonial Studies series is a collection
of studies on empires in world history and on the societies and cultures
which emerged from colonialism. It includes both transnational, compara-
tive and connective studies, and studies which address where particular
regions or nations participate in global phenomena. While in the past the
series focused on the British Empire and Commonwealth, in its current
incarnation there is no imperial system, period of human history or part of
the world which lies outside of its compass. While we particularly welcome
the first monographs of young researchers, we also seek major studies by
more senior scholars, and welcome collections of essays with a strong the-
matic focus. The series includes work on politics, economics, culture, lit-
erature, science, art, medicine, and war. Our aim is to collect the most
exciting new scholarship on world history with an imperial theme.

One accumulates many debts when writing any book, and a collection
such as this (bringing together the work of fourteen different scholars)
multiplies that accumulation. Individual contributors have included in
their notes specific thanks for insights and support, and the editors wish to
thank them here as well.
Ireland in an Imperial World grew out of conversations among the
editors and many of the contributors over a series of years, while each of
us independently pursued research into Ireland and empire. Most par-
ticularly, it was at meetings of the American Conference for Irish Studies
(ACIS)—an organization that has fostered formal and informal contacts
for each of us—that we talked seriously about bringing together themes
from the corpus of this burgeoning literature. Indeed, many of the earliest
presentations of the material contained herein occurred at ACIS meetings,
including in a series of panels held at University College Dublin in 2014.
We are truly grateful for the comments, questions, and encouragement we
received from colleagues at such moments.
We are indebted as well to numerous individuals and institutions for
