Sacerdote en 1951, ejerció como profesor de teología fundamental en Bonn y de dogma e historia de los dogmas en Münster y Ratisbona. Arzobispo de Múnich y Freising en 1977, fue promovido a cardenal ese mismo año; ha sido durante muchos años prefecto de la Congregación para la doctrina de la fe. El 19 de abril de 2005 es elegido papa, tomando el nombre de Benedicto XVI, y el 28 de febrero de 2013 hizo efectiva su renuncia como Sumo Pontífice.
