Preface
In 2006, professor Zhongxue Wu brought me into the field of endovascular
neurosurgery. At that time, words like “neurointervention” was only found in
some papers, and it had not been used to name a subspecialty. The term that I
mostly saw and heard was Intervention Neuroradiology. It’s also the name of
a journal, which helps me a lot because it publishes papers that I like to read.
Professor Pierre Lasjaunias was alive at the time, and his contributions to
interventional neuroradiology made him my role model. Professor Marco
Leonardi was a wonderful person who supported, encouraged, and trusted me
in my darkest moments. Professor Karel terBrugge had been the editor-in-
chief of Intervention Neuroradiology and I was very moved by his comments.
Timo Krings strikes me as a very wise man. They are my role models and I
am very grateful to them for their support. They have made outstanding con-
tributions to the treatment of dural arteriovenous fistulas. Dural arteriovenous
fistulas have intrigued me from the beginning because of their complexity.
My doctoral dissertation was related to dural arteriovenous fistula. In recent
years, the development of neurointervention has been very rapid and has
matured into a discipline. The understanding and treatment of dural arterio-
venous fistula have also undergone fundamental changes, from venous
approach to arterial approach, to venous sinus recanalization and reconstruc-
tion. The advent of new catheters and embolic materials has provided more
options for the treatment of dural arteriovenous fistulas. Because there has
not been a monograph on dural arteriovenous fistula before, I edited this
book. It is hoped that through this book, medical students and physicians in
neurosurgery, neurology, and radiology will learn more about and understand
this complex disease. Thanks to my teacher, professor Zhongxue Wu, who
has been supporting me, trusting me, and shielding me from the wind and
rain; otherwise, I would not be where I am today. Thanks to all the outstand-
ing scholars who have contributed to the research of dural arteriovenous fis-
tula. Thanks to Springer Nature and Stephanie Sibin for their hard work in
making this book possible.
