FAITH AMONG US
FAITH AMONG US is a new section being introduced to our weekly bulletin as we live a Church of Mercy.
This page will be included occasionally to highlight the wonderful works of mercy and acts of faith being
done by fellow parishioners with their pure trust in God. Church of the Ascension is a vibrant community
filled with amazing people and we want to share how parishioners are using their God given talents and love.
We know that acts of mercy and faithfulness are being completed each and every day by Church of the
Ascension parishioners including yourself. If you have a faith story you wish to share or know someone that
others would love to hear about, please submit an article with 250 words or less and a picture to Dawnlee
Maurer at [email protected].
An Interview with Joe Schwarzenberger
By Jim Schwarzenberger
Recently Kathy and I were contacted by the parish and were asked if one of
us would write an article on behalf of my father Joe Schwarzenberger. This
transpired as a result of his request for envelopes for the weekly Sunday
collection. My dad turned 101 on October 15. I decided to just tell dad about
this request and ask him some simple questions about his desire to continue
his weekly contributions to the Church. I hope dad's common sense
responses can bear some fruit.
Jim: Some folks at Ascension Parish are intrigued that a 101 year old man would want to get
envelopes and contribute to the collection now. What do you say to that?
Dad: Why not now?
(Interesting that he focused on the word “now.”)
Jim: Some might say that you do not need to do this anymore, that you've “done your duty.” And
what do you say to that?
Dad: I want to do it.
Jim: Why?
Dad: Because we are to love our neighbor. And our neighbor needs us. It all stems from loving our
neighbor as ourselves.
Jim: What else?
Dad: It is an expression of my faith and my trust in the Church.
There are no coincidences in life. Right after I visited with dad I opened a book he was reading and
found a card with perhaps St. Mother Teresa's most famous quote: “Never think that a small action
done to your neighbor is not worth much. It is not how much we do that is pleasing to God, but how
much love we put into the doing.” True stewardship at 21, 51 or even 101.
