About ALM Technology and Architecture
ALMisanenterprise-wideapplicationthatisbasedonJava2EnterpriseEdition
(J2EE)technology.J2EEtechnologyprovidesacomponent-basedapproachtothe
design,development,assembly,anddeploymentofenterpriseapplications.

Understanding the ALM Components
AnALMsystemcontainsthefollowingcomponents:
l ALM client components.WhenyouopenApplicationLifecycleManagementor
SiteAdministrationonyourclientmachine,clientcomponentsaredownloaded
tothemachine.ALMclientcomponentsinteractwitheachotherusing.NETand
COMtechnologies.TheclientcommunicateswiththeserveroverHTTP/S.
l ALM server/Application server.Clientrequestsaredispatchedbyservletsto
thedeployedserver.ALMcomeswithabuilt-inapplicationservercalledtheALM
ApplicationServer.
ThedeployedapplicationcontainsApplicationLifecycleManagement,Site
Administration,andassociatedfileswhicharepackagedintoaWebApplication
Archive(WAR)file.ClientrequestsfromALMaredispatchedtothedeployed
application.
TheJavaDatabaseConnectivity(JDBC)interfaceisusedtocommunicate
betweentheapplicationserveranddatabaseserver(s).
TheservercanrunonaWindowsorLinuxplatform.
l Database server(s).Thedatabaseserverstoresthreetypesofschemas:
l Site Administration schema.StoresinformationrelatedtotheALMsystem,
suchasdomains,users,andsiteparameters.Arowexistsinthisschemafor
eachprojectyoucreate.
Irrespectiveofhowyouconfigureyoursystem,thereisalwaysonlyoneSite
Administrationschema.

l Lab_Project.Storeslabinformationrelatedtomanagingfunctionaland
performancetestingonremotehosts,LoadRunnerEnterpriseserverdata,and
licenses.ThereisalwaysonlyoneLab_Projectschema.
l Project schemas.Storesprojectinformation,suchasentitydataanduser
data.Aseparateschemaexistsforeveryprojectyoucreate.
Bydefault,theprojectschemasarecreatedonthesamedatabaseserveras
theSiteAdministrationschema.Thesedefaultprojectschemasareusefulfor
smallersetups.However,ifyouareworkingwithalargenumberofprojectsor
withasmallnumberofhugeprojects,itmaybeadvisabletodefineadditional
databaseserverssolelyforstoringprojectschemas.Youdefineadditional
serversintheSiteAdministrationDBServerstab.Fordetails,refertothe
MicroFocusApplicationLifecycleManagementAdministratorGuide.
TheschemascanresideonanOracleoronaMicrosoftSQLserver.Fordetailed
guidelinesondeployingonthedatabaseserver,refertotheMicroFocusALM
DatabaseBestPracticesGuide.
Note: Toimprovesystemperformance,itisadvisablethattheALMserver
andtheDatabaseserverbeinstalledonseparatemachinesandbe
connectedoverLAN.
l Project repository.Storesallfilestobeusedbyalltheprojectsinthesystem.
Forexample,.xmlfiles,templates,andattachments.Bydefaulttherepositoryis
locatedonthesamemachineastheapplicationserver,whichisusefulfor
smallersetups.Forlargerorganizationshowever,orwhenworkinginaclustered
environment,itisadvisabletoinstalltherepositoryonadedicatedmachine.
Whenworkinginaclusteredenvironment,therepositorymustbeaccessibleby
allnodes.
l Load balancer.Whenworkingwithaloadbalancer,clientrequestsare
transmittedtotheloadbalanceranddistributedaccordingtoserveravailability
withinthecluster.
l Tanuki wrapper.AJavaservicewrapperthatallowsALMtobeinstalledand
controlledlikeanativeWindowsService.Italsoincludesadvancedfault
detectionsoftwaretomonitorALM.
