PREFACE
AFTER several lUdiitlisoflal)orioLisResearchaud persistenttoil,theliistpiyofPottawat-
tamie County is complete,and it is our iiope and belief that no subject of general
importanceorinteresthasbeenoverlookeiroromitted,andevenminor facts,when ofsutticienl
note to be worthy of record, have been-faithfully chron-icled. In short, where protracted
investigation promised results commensurate with the undertaking, matters not only of
undoubtedrecordbutlegendary lore,havebeenbroughtintorequisition. Wearewellawareof
thefactthatitisnexttoimpossible to furnishaperfect history from the meager resourcesat
thecommandoftheliistorianunderordinarycircumstances,butclaimtohavepreparedawork
fullyuptothestandardofourengagements. Throughthecourtesy and assistance generously
aflbrded.wehavebeenenabledtotraceoutand putintosystematic shape the greater portions
oftheeventsthathavetranspired in thecounty up to the present time,andwe feel assureil
thatallthoughtfulpersonsinterestedinthematterwillrecognizeandappreciatetheimportance
oftheworkanditspermanentvalue. Adrystatementof factshasbeen avoided,so far as it
was possibletodoso.andanecdoteand incident havelicen interwovenwith plain recital and
