Summary
The heterogeneously catalyzed amination of aliphatic alcohols by ammonia,
primary, secondaryortertiary aminesis awellknownandimportantprocessfor
thesynthesisofamines.Incomparisontonumerousreportsonaminationofsimple
aliphaticalcohols,studiesontheaminationofdiolstothecorrespondingdiamines
are rare. This is clearly not due to amissing interestin these products, because
diamines find a broad range of commercial application (e.g. chelating agents,
fungicides, fibres, polyamideresins, epoxycuring agents). Thelikelyreasonfor
thelimitedscientific interestisthattheaminationofsimplealiphaticalcoholsis
alreadyaverycomplexprocesswithseveralsidereactions:(I)disproportionofthe
aminetoformsecondaryandtertiaryamines,(ii)condensationordecarbonylation
of the carbonyl compound intermediate, (iii) formation of nitriles at high
temperature and low hydrogen partial pressure and (iv) hydrocracking and
hydrogenolysis.Thedifficultiesinobtainingreasonableselectivitiesareincreased,
whenusingadiol. Interestingly,noestablishedindustrialprocess startsfromthe
diol. Most of the primary diamines are manufactured from a,œ- alkylene
dichlorides. However, adisadvantageofthis method is the corrosioncausedby
hydrogenchloride.Theneutralizationoftheacidcreateslargeamountsofaqueous
sodiumchloride andgrowingdisposal problems. Consideringthe availabilityof
reactants,thecorrosionandenvironmentalproblems,theheterogeneoustransition
metal catalyzed amination of diols could be an attractive alternative to some
established processes. The study ofdiol amination was the aim of the present
