TO THE CLASS OF 2007
Welcome to The Citadel. As members of the
Class of 2007 you will soon be starting one of the
greatestadventuresofyourlives.TheCitadeldemands
much of its students in terms of intellectual rigor,
physicalstamina,andhonorablebehavior.Youroppor-
tunitiesforpersonalgrowthwillbelimitedonlybyyour
willingnesstomaketheefforttoimprovewitheachnew
challenge.
As cadets, you will work harder than you ever
thoughtpossible. Youwilldeveloplastingbonds with
classmates who will supportyourefforts and applaud
your successes. You will experience the rewards of
commitment, the value of personal honor, and the
confidencethatcomesfromadisciplinedlifestyle.You

JOHN SOUTHY GRINALDS
PRESIDENT

Major General John Southy Grinalds, United
States Marine Corps (Retired), was namedeighteenth
PresidentofTheCitadelonhis59thbirthday,January
5, 1997.
With family roots deep in the Eastern Shore of
Virginia, General Grinalds was bom in Baltimore,
Maryland,in 1938.HisfamilymovedtoMacon,Geor-
gia,whenhewastenyearsold.Bythetimehegraduated
fromhighschool,GeneralGrinaldshadbecomeaclass
officer, an all-state football player, an honor student,
andcoloneloftheJuniorROTCunit.
Appointed to the United States Military Acad-
emy, General Grinalds was graduated with honors in
1959,earningaBSdegree.GeneralGrinaldscontinued
hiseducationatBrasenoseCollege,OxfordUniversity
as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor's and master's
degrees in geography and, once again, was graduated
withhonors.GeneralGrinaldsservedasaWhiteHouse
Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard
Business Schoolwithdistinctionin 1974.
ServingwiththeDepartmentofDefenseSystems
AnalysisOfficeduringthelate1960s,—GeneralGrinalds
becameamanpowerplanninganalyst afieldinwhich
hedevelopedanexpertiseusedthroughouthismilitary
career.
General Grinalds has served abroad in the
Mediterraneanregion,thePanamaCanalZone,Japan,
Belgium,andfortwotoursofdutyinVietnam.During
one of those tours, General Grinalds was awarded a
SilverStarforheroismincombat.From 1982to 1985,
General Grinalds served as special assistant to the
Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, working in
delicate negotiations between NATO and the French
miUtary Becauseofhisoutstandingservicethere,French
.
President Francois Mitterand inducted him into the
Legiond'Honneur,ararehonorforanAmericancolonel.
In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank of
brigadiergeneralbeforebeginninganassignmentserving
theChairmanoftheJointChiefsofStaff. Hewaslater
promotedtomajorgeneraland,in 1989,wasappointed
the commanding general oftheMarine Corps Recruit
DepotinSanDiego,Cahfomia,apositionhehelduntil
hisretirementin 1991.
GeneralGrinaldsthenbecametheseventhhead-
master of one of the South's most prestigious boys'
preparatoryschools,WoodberryForestSchool,Wood-
berryForest,Virginia,whereheserveduntilcomingto
TheCitadel.
General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, his
childhood sweetheart from Macon, in 1962. Mrs.
Grinalds is a graduate of Salem College in Winston-
Salem, North Carolina. They have four children;
Drummond, a 1986Harvardgraduate; Southy, a 1987
graduate of Harvard; Kate, a 1991 graduate of the
University ofGeorgia; andAllen, who completed the
UnitedStatesNavalAcademyin 1994.
General Grinalds is active in a number of
organizations. Heis amemberofthe SeniorBoardof
Directors of the Brasenose College Charitable
Foundation,atrusteeofPorter-GaudSchool,amember
oftheExecutiveBoardoftheCoastalCarolinaCouncil,
Boy Scouts of America and has membership in the
Officers ChristianFellowship,theWhiteHouseFellows
'
Association, the Association of American Rhodes
Scholars,andtheSonsoftheAmericanRevolution.He
isaformertrusteeofHampden-SydneyCollegeandthe
Madeira School and has served as a member of the
VirginiaandSouthCarolinastateselectioncommittees
fortheRhodes ScholarshipTrust.
