the facts which you will learn and remember always

personages.Yetinthelastanalysis,yourpresencehere

when the coveted diploma and possible armed forces
commission are earnedby you at graduation, you can

As members of the Class
t of 2012, you are entering The
Citadel at a time when the need
for principled leaders is greater
than it has everbeen. You are to
be commended for accepting the
academic,physicalandemotional
challenges that awaityou. Those
challenges will foster personal growth that develops
youinmind,bodyandspirit.
Your time as a cadet will be more demanding
and more rewarding than you ever thought possible.
Soon after you arrive, you will understand that your
relationshipswithclassmatesarecentraltoyoursuccess,
as they will be the ones to support and encourage
you.
Acommitmenttopersonalintegrityisrequiredof
eachcadet,andasyoupracticeself-respectandrespect
forothers,youwillgaintheconfidencethatcomeswith
adisciplinedlifestyle. Youwilllearnthevalueoftaking
responsibilityforyouractions,andyouwillexperience
therewardsthatfollowhonorablebehavior. Onceyou

Relatively few choose this "road less traveled"
becauseitisademandingone. Butthosewhomakethis
choicefindanewlevelofopportunity,self-confidence,
andfulfillmentthatfarexceedstheirexpectations.
TheCitadelexperienceisateameffort. Thefaculty,
youradvisor,andallofusinAcademicAffairsareapart
ofthat team. We want you to succeed, and we stand
ready to assist you. The faculty-student relationship
is a special one. As faculty members, we endeavorto
create in our students a level ofexcitement about the
academicdisciplinesthatrivalsthelovewehaveforour
ownchosenfieldofstudy. Ourfacultyarededicatedto
theteaching-learningprocess, andourgreatestreward
is to see highly-motivated students develop to their
potential.
We view learning as ajourney not a destination.
You and your family have already made a significant
commitmenttothatjourney. Nowwejoinyouforthese
nextfouryearsonthatjourneywhichwehopewillbe
very rewarding and will prepare you for a lifetime of
learning.
Our goal is notjust to teach facts. Our goal on
this part of thejourney is to assist you in enhancing
yourabilities to think, to analyze, to communicate, to
value, andtobetolerantofdiversephilosophies. You
play amajorroleinhowwellwe succeedatthis goal.
The morepreparedyou are on adailybasis, the more
rewardingwillbethejourneyforallofus. Iurgeyou
toremainfocusedandtomakeasignificantinvestment
in your future during these next four years. Such an
investment has made the difference for thousands of

decision to attend The Citadel.
Thenextfouryearsofyourlifeare
going to be the most challenging
and rewarding you have yet to
encounter. They will encompass
academic, military,and physical
challengesyou'venotexperienced.
However, I'mcertainthatwithyourdecisiontoattend
The Citadel, you are ready to apply yourself, take on,
andconquerthesechallenges.
Being a Citadel cadet comes with many
responsibilities.Theseincludeaccountability,character,
andconcernforothers. Theleadershiplaboratorywhich
you are about to enter will mold you into a first class
citizen-leader.YourCitadelexperiencewillprovideyou
thetoolstomeetthedifficulttasksoflifeaftergraduation,
beitinthemilitary orciviliancommunity.
Everyyearasacadetisanexciting,diverselearning
experience. Eachisabuildingblockforthenext. During
yourfirstyear,youwillundergoatransformationunlike
that at any other college. You will learn the elements
of duty, honor, values and respect, social skills, and
positiveleadership. Thisis onlythefoundation. Your
future years will take this learning and build upon it.
