Preface
The present work is an attempt to provide a systematic
treatment of genetic linkage in diploid heredity. Part A presents
a general account of statistical methods which can be brought
to bear on the problem. The primary emphasis is on the
practical aspects of estimation. A large proportion, if not the
majority, of mutant genes fail to match up to 'textbook'
genes-with faultless segregation ratios and expression-yet,
these are the materials with which the practical researcher has
to cope. For this reason, it is important to know how to deal
with the assortment of genes which may display significant
deviations from expectation.
Part B examines the accumulated data on linkage for most of
the laboratory mammals and provides a comprehensive and
up-to-date survey. The need for a critical review has often been
expressed and it is hoped that the present analysis will fill the
gap. The volume of material is probably the most important in
the animal kingdom other than that for Drosophila species.

House Mouse
Mus musculus (n = 19 + X + Y)
The house mouse has emerged as the laboratory animal par
excellence for mammalian genetics. The main reason for this is
technical but there is also the fact that the mouse 'got in first'
in those early days when the variations present in fanders'
stocks were eagerly exploited for confirmation and extension of
Mendelian inheritance. This early lead has never been lost and
the accumulative information on the spedes is now so extensive
that no other mammalian species is likely to supplant it. This is
not to imply that the house mouse is ideal for all types of
research, nor that the comparative genetics of other species
should be neglected. Far from it in fact. Excessive
concentration on one species is to be deplored.
The mouse is well served with reviews on genetics and
descriptions of known mutants. The most important of the
older works is that of Gruneberg (1952) and is still valuable in
several respects. Two useful catalogues are those of Gruneberg
(1956) and Sidman, Green, and Appel (1965), the latter having
the added appeal of being a specialist account of behavioural
and neurological mutants. The assignment of genes to the
known linkage groups has received attention. Dickie (1954b),
Green and Dickie (1959), E. L. Green (1966), and M. C. Green
(1963, 1966, 1968), have each compiled reviews. The fact of
these successive compilations is a reflection of the progressive
increase of information on linkage in the mouse.
The mouse has far outstripped other Iaboratory animals in
the number of known mutant genes/loci. Some loci in fact
possess an impressive series of mutant alleles. Arecent estimate
places the number of known loci in the region of 400. It is
almost certain at this time that this number has been exceeded.
Table 11.1 lists those Iod whose alleles have featured in tests
for linkage. The investigation of linkage is an important aspect
of mouse genetics and this work has resulted in a substantial
proportion of known Iod being assigned to linkage groups.

Although no dear evidence has yet emerged for the existence of
partial sex-linkage (i.e .. crossingover between the X and Y),
crossingover regularly occurs for the X chromosome in the
female.
