~TERMINOLOGY~

Broad categories of care options and facility terms
are listed in this guide. Terminology may vary
from facility to facility.

Adult Day Centers – A non-residential facility that
supports the health, nutritional, social support, and daily
living needs of adults in professionally staffed, group
setting. Adult Day Centers offer programs in facilities or
function as independent organizations. The services may
include but are not limited to personal care, assistance with
eating or using the toilet, assistance with taking medication,
and social assistance. Centers offer a protective, supervised
setting and generally operate during normal business hours.

Home Care Services – May be provided in a residential
setting or as ancillary services, such as in personal care and
assisted living or a nursing home environment. Services
include skilled nursing, therapies, as well as non-medical
services such as light housekeeping, transportation and
more.

Hospice Care – Hospice care is for families living and
coping with life-limiting illnesses. Hospice provides
professional treatment of pain and symptom management
with support and counseling. It includes medical,
psychological, and spiritual support.

Nursing Homes – 24—hour health related care and
services provided on a regular basis to individuals who
require care ordered by and provided under the direction of
a physician.

PACE – PACE or the Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract
for the Elderly is a state prescription assistance program
administered through the Pennsylvania Department of
Aging and funded through the Lottery Benefits. To be
eligible for PACE you must be 65 years or older and a
Pennsylvania resident at least 90 days before the date of
application. You cannot be enrolled in the Department of
Public Welfare’s Medicaid prescription benefit.

PACENET – PACENET is a state prescription assistance
program administered through the Pennsylvania
Department of Aging and funded through the Lottery
Benefits. To be eligible for PACENET, you must be 65 years
or older, a Pennsylvania resident at least 90 days before the
date of application, you must not be enrolled in the
Medicaid prescription benefit program.

Personal Care Homes – Residential facilities that offer
personal care services, assistance and supervision to four or
more persons. They are inspected and licensed by the
Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. Personal Care
Homes offer food, shelter, and personal assistance or
supervision. They are ideal for people who do not want to
forfeit independence and do not require services in or of a
licensed long-term care facility but do require assistance or
supervision in Activities of Daily Living (ADL).

Respite Care – Temporary institutional care of a
dependent elderly, ill, or handicapped person, providing
relief for their usual caregivers. Respite Care provides care
giving opportunities on a short term basis. Care may range
from personal to nursing care.

Taxes – Taxes are a compulsory contribution to state
revenue, levied by the government of workers’ income and
business profits or added to the cost of some goods,
services, and transactions. Sales tax exemptions include
groceries, health related items, medical services, and
prescriptions.

Protective Services are provided to incapacitated older
adults unable to perform or obtain services that are
necessary to maintain physical or mental health, for
whom there is no responsible caretaker and who are at
imminent danger to person or property. Agency staff are
available to receive reports, investigate and take
necessary actions regarding abuse, neglect, exploitation
or abandonment. 24 hour on—call service available.

Services include: a hotline, emergency shelter,
counseling, legal advocacy, and prevention services to
victims of sexual and domestic violence. Also operates a
Sexual Assault Response Team for victims of sexual
assault age 13 or older.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of
men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is
nonprofessional, self—supporting, multiracial, apolitical,
and available almost everywhere. There are no age or
education requirements. Membership is open to anyone
that wants to do something about his or her drinking
problem.

Programs to oversee and/or carry out the administration,

services. FFDA has three subdivisions, which include
treatment, intervention, and prevention.

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving)

The nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families
from drunk driving and underage drinking. Call to find

Narcotics Anonymous

addiction through working a twelve—step program,
