FROM THE VICAR’S DESK

As you come to him, the living stone – rejected by humans but chosen by God
and precious to him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a
spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable
to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:4, 5)

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The New Testament uses a number of different descriptive images to
show what the church is like. In this Epistle Peter explores the imagery of the
church as a building, with every Christian a stone built into that building. This
is God’s building and this imagery explains the importance of unity of the
building. There is no separation of stones that make up the building. Everything
is closely joined together. The foundation of this building is the most important
aspect. The same Jesus whom others have seen as a stumbling rock was a very
precious stone and the chief cornerstone of this building. It has to be strong
enough to support what was built upon it. God views Christ as the most valuable
thing in existence. The cornerstone was the major structural part of ancient
buildings. It was the stone that held together the building that gave alignment to
every other stone that set the standard for other stones.

Jesus should be the corner stone of our entire life situation. We can
assume that Christ will never fail us, never mess up, never forsake us or give up
on us. Christ is the foundation on which our lives are built up on. Without this
corner stone our lives are out of balance. Many of us were separated in the past
into different pieces. Pieces that have little in common, different economic
situations and interests. However, God the master builder has taken us and put
us together, joined us together in his building, the church. When we became
part of this building we became a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, God’s special possession etc. (v .9)

We are the living stone of God’s building, the church. This is a precious
responsibility upon us. We are called to this situation through our savior Jesus
Christ. So our words and deeds should reflect this living experience. As a parish
we have to submit our lives as living stones and build our lives upon the only
cornerstone Jesus Christ. May God help us to lead such a wonderful life.
