PREFACE
rhis historic, constructional period, in which the national idea
H seen to acquire definiteform; when national boundaries are tending
to become defined more and more along lines ofethnical cleavage and
trntities group on race aliuity; when the consciousness of a world
misr^ion becomes the logical fruit of widespread education, and e.ich
racial unit lends to arrange itself upon its n?itural base, to develop
more fully and take its proper place in the concert of world powers
to bear its share of the burden and the heat of the day in bringing to
a richer fruition the heritageof man; this is the time of creatir>g
new factors of linguistic development.
[n this epoch the natives of the Philippines, after being for over
three centuries shut off by a worse than Chinese wall of exclusion
of progrcs-*, tight bound by the swaddling clothes of religious and
secular {prejudice, whereDy growth was hindered, have at last been
freed of the trammels, and in less than two decades have taken enor-
mous strides forward on the path of national greatness
It is at such time^, when the trammels ofdialects and other var-
iants of speech are most strongly mnde manifest, and prove the test
of true national fitness. A united Germany with its people speaking
(iiverse dialects w is only solved by making one of them the standard
and from the rest enriching it, making it the virile expression of
national consciousness.
The world has seen no strong nation adopt the language of
another people; still lass that of a rnce alien in thought, feeling,
speech and habit. Hence, however well meaning it may^ be to try
to implant the English speech in these Islands as a common medium,
it is so obviously a violation of all psychic and ethnic unities, that
(*an never, in the opinion of the writer, be a lasting sucjcess.
Hence a solution along those line-^ that centuries of experience
has proven to be the only logical, because natural one, that of a de-
veloped national lan«:nMj/e based on national stock audi material, en-
riched iind perfected, but akin to the native spirit of rich and poor
alike, is the only one thwt, in the end, will succeed. Whatever the
place of English, no doubt important in the economic development
of land and people, a national, mulasian language is bound to be the
pr(>[)er vehicle of a united Filipino people Hence a book fi ie the
present, which gives concrete form to this innate aspiration, and
wliatever its presec^t impe^feccions, which detinitelv sliapes the raw
mat(?rial along plausible, stable lines of development, is worth}' of
af)plHUse, study and support. It can, only be recomendtd to the
thoughtful stu<ly of friend and foe alike, in order that it may fulfill
its mission of aiding in the solution of that important question, the
future language of the Filipino people. May it meet with success,
and that each successive edition be a vast improvement on the pre-

INTRODUCTION
This vocabulary is intended mostly to meet the demands of
,
those who want to establish a common Filipino language, the aim
and purpose of the **Ak.deniya ng Wik^ng Filipino ' (Academy of
the Filipino Language). It contains words used in everyday life
and is very practical. It is a mixture of the different Philippine
dialects with the Tagalog as basis. Most of the words, of course,
are Tagalog, but a large number also are taken from the Bisayan,
ilokano, BiKol, Pampangan and other native dialects, all of which
are Tagnlized. Most of the technical terms have been taken direct-
ly from their primitive sources, Greek and Latin, the Filipinization
of which and that of their derivatives have been made complete
through the natural linguistic mechanism of Tagalog and Bisayan.
The work consists of two parts

Part 1, which is the present book, is an attempt to i^resent the
essentials of Filipino Granmar in such a form that without stating
any grammatical definitions and rules it is practically a combina
tion of vocabulary and grammar based upon the Tagalog language.

As to this, all the p.nicies suffixes, prefixes and interfixes «re
—applied; and combined with the roots form a great number of noun-?

abstract, collective and verbal , various classes of adjectives, fre-^
quenmtives, verbs conjugated in the active and passive voices. Afier
the alphabetical list of root-/erbs with their respective infinitive
forms follow the adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjec-
tioas. In this work the copiousness and great impor ance of Lakan-
Dulas tOhgue have been demonstrated in order that it may be the
foundation of a national speech rich and vigorous.
Part II also forms a separate book and is based on the English
Grammar. It (*oniains a great deal of examples and excercises in
which the grammatical rules of this language are practic^*lly involved.
Both parts together arc dedicated to the students of the Filipino
and English languages, and I firmly believe that in the making of
this vocabulary, which was compiled during five years of philolo:;:ical
studies of English at d the cultivated Philippine tongues, I have
contributed somewhat to the national culture of my beloved native
country.
I desire to express my indebtedness to the ilustrious director of
*'Ateneo Rizal^', the wise philologer and Filipinist Dr. Paul L.
Stanifl, B. S M. Ph for his valuable aid in the compilation of

this book and for itnportant suggestions upon the suitable way of
enriching th^ Filipino lexicon by adopting and Filipinizing the uni-
ver-^al sciemific words takf^n from Greek.
Likewise I express my cordial gratitude to the Academy of the
FiUpino Language, wh ch has officially approved and adopted this
brief v« cabiilary as the first work of its kind sanctioned by the
authorily of tKat National Linguistic Association.
