The papers included in this Proceedings volume were presented April 9-12, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia at a conference titled
“Emerging Issues Along Urban-Rural Interfaces II: Linking Land-Use Science and Society.” This conference was a natural
extension of our original, similar-themed Urban-Rural Interface conference held in 2005. The broad cross-disciplinary appeal,
international participation, and general topical enthusiasm reflected by the conference contributors and attendees owe much to
the creative spark provided by B. Graeme Lockaby, Director of Auburn University’s Center for Forest Sustainability.
The conference attracted 240 attendees, from 16 countries. Including the five keynote speakers, there were 166 presenters, rep-
resenting a wide spectrum of perspectives, both academic and non-academic. All presentations at the conference are represented
here, in the form of a paper or an abstract. This information also is available at www.sfws.auburn.edu/urbanruralinterfaces/. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all contributors to the conference for helping to make it a genuinely exciting and
exceptional event for everyone who attended.
The planning for the conference benefited greatly from the contributions of many individuals, especially members of the Steering
Committee: Eve Brantley, Annie Hermansen-Baez, Graeme Lockaby, Ed Macie, and John Schelhas. Our keynote speakers—Jo-
seph Chamie, Ann Bartuska, Art Gold, Bill Shaw and Mark Eigenraam—commanded widespread respect, enthusiasm, and praise
from the conference attendees. They merit special thanks for contributing their expertise and perspectives so generously, with

ntroductIon
The breadth of views and disciplinary orientations brought together at the 2007 Urban-Rural Interface Conference in Atlanta is
reflected in the following pages. This marked the second conference in Atlanta aimed at bringing together those who deal with
urban-rural interface issues throughout the global community. Conference objectives included (1) the facilitation of discussion
and sharing of perspectives by stakeholders from around the world and (2) the fostering of interdisciplinary linkages that better
enable complex ramifications of urban sprawl to be addressed.
It is well recognized that urban sprawl is a ubiquitous phenomenon and this was evident in the geographic backgrounds of attend-
ees. Approximately 240 people attended the conference, representing 10 countries and 40 of the 50 U.S. states. Many participants
established valuable contacts with other researchers, practitioners, educators, and/or policymakers that should serve as conduits
for the continued exchange of ideas and future collaborations. In particular, students were encouraged to attend, and special ef-
forts (such as the ‘student only’ discussion session with keynote speakers) were made to make them feel welcome.
The Conference organizers and sponsors thank those who attended and presented their ideas. We hope that the Proceedings will
serve as a long-term source of information that facilitates the search for compatibility among urban sprawl, natural resources,
and the quality of human lives.
