Ecología del Paisaje y de la Evaluación Ambiental. Llevando a la práctica, de esta
manera, una de las principales razones de ser de la Asociación Técnica de Ecología del
Paisaje y Seguimiento Ambiental, ECOPÁS.
Esta obra, variada en sus contenidos y rigurosa en sus aproximaciones, aprovecha el
altavoz que ECOPÁS ofrece a los especialistas, en sus campos de referencia, para
divulgar los resultados o el conocimiento que emana de su experiencia en las materias
objeto de su trabajo, facilitando su uso en el día a día por parte de muchos técnicos o
estudiantes de diferentes perfiles profesionales. Nuestro principal objetivo es mejorar los
procedimientos, las técnicas y, en definitiva, el servicio a la Sociedad que se espera de
un buen profesional, responsable, comprometido con su trabajo y el entorno que le rodea.
This book is the first result of the collective effort made by an experts group who, directly
or not, play their professional roles in the fields of Landscape Ecology and Environmental
Assessment. The aim is lead to practice, by this way, one of the main objectives of the
Technical Association for Landscape Ecology and Environmental Monitoring, ECOPÁS.
This work, diverse in its topics and accurate in its approaches, makes the most of the
speaker that ECOPÁS offers to specialists in their reference fields, to spread up the
results or knowledge that flows out from their experience in their work , issuing other
technicians or students from many different field to apply them in their daily work. Our
main objective is to improve procedures, techniques, and all things considered, public
service expected from professional, responsible people, committed with their work and the
environment around them.

FOREWORD TO THE ECOPAS INTRODUCTORY BOOK
Landscape ecology is a relatively young discipline because, although the term was coined
in the 1930s, regular meetings were not held until the 1980s. Whilst there was much
discussion of theoretical concepts in the early meetings, landscape ecology has now
developed a strong science base involving hypotheses and concepts that can be tested in
the field. The discipline has progressively become separated from mainstream ecology by
the recognition of the holistic nature of landscapes and their inherent complexity. The
recognition of the interrelationships between the elements that form landscapes and their
interdependence is at the centre of the discipline. The role of man in the formation of
cultural landscapes, and the importance of recognizing the necessity of understanding the
link to current driving forces, is also central to much landscape ecological research.
Landscape ecologists have always been committed to applying their scientific results to
practical issues and have made many important contributions to strategic planning, as
well as at more local levels. In addition to Landscape Ecology, a wide range of scientific
topics is now included in the discussions at conferences and in papers in a variety of
journals. Important topics include connectivity between landscape elements, pattern
analysis, biodiversity at the landscape level and monitoring of landscape change.
However, new topics such as the study of urban areas and the impacts of climate change
on landscapes are always emerging.
The study of landscape ecology is supported and encouraged through the International
Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE) which currently has over 1,800 members
worldwide. Activities are reported through the web site www.landscape-ecology.org, on
which “hot” topics are also presented and discussed. A World Congress is held every four
years; the next is in Beijing in 2011; alternating with a European meeting which this year
was held in Salzburg. A European chapter was formed at this meeting, and many other
countries in Europe and elsewhere have their own national organizations. The published
abstracts of these conferences provide an overview of the topics covered in of the various
symposia and workshops. These abstracts also provide an invaluable source of reference
material by defining the current state of landscape ecological research.
The objectives and concepts outlined in the ECOPÁS statutes fit well into this framework,
with environmental monitoring being essential in providing a basis for future management
of the landscape resource. Accordingly, I wish ECOPÁS every success in promoting the
cause of landscape ecology.
