Vorbemerkung.
Das Erscheinen dieses schon vielerorts erwarteten Bandes ist jetzt durch das
Eintreffen der letzten Manuskripte ermöglicht worden. Der Band enthält 70 Ein
zelbeiträge, an denen 53 Autoren mitgearbeitet haben. Bei einem Werke dieses
Umfanges ist es unvermeidlich, daß gewisse Ungleichheiten in der Behandlung
des Stoffes entstehen und daß sich der Abschluß der Beiträge über eine gewisse
Zeit hinauszog -wenn auch oft aus Gründen "höherer Gewalt".
Verlag und Bandherausgeber sehen jedoch das besondere Anliegen des vor
liegenden Bandes darin, alles vorhandene Material, neues wie altes, zusammen
zutragen, zu sieben und zu einem breiten und festen Fundament für weitere
Literatur-und Experimentalarbeit zusammenzufügen. Es ist natürlich erwünscht,
daß dies Fundament soweit in die jüngste Gegenwart hineinreicht wie nur an
gängig. Aber es verliert seinen Zweck nicht, wenn es an einigen Stellen etwas
hinter diesem Ziel zurückbleibt.
Diese Erklärung bezweckt jedoch nicht, der Kritik vorzugreifen, sondern nur,
sie von denjenigen Autoren abzuwenden, welche ihre Beiträge frühzeitig ein
lieferten und welche gerade deswegen einige der neuesten Ergebnisse auf ihrem
Gebiete nicht mehr berücksichtigen konnten.

Prefatory remark.
Receipt of the last contributions makes it possible to present this volume
- long expected in many quarters - to the public. The volume contains 70
chapters, written by a total of 53 authors. In a treatise of this size it is un
avoidable that there is some difference in the approach to the subject matter,
and that the completion of the contributions extended over some period of time
- although often for reasons of the "Act-of-God" type.
Publisher and editor feel that the principal objective of an encyclopedia
is to pull together and sift all available information, new as weil as old, and
thus to serve as a broad and solid foundation for future Iiterature and experi
mental studies. It is obviously desirable that this foundation includes as many
of the most recent developments as possible, but if in some places it falls slightly
short of this goal its objective is not defeated.
However, this comment is not offered to forestall criticism but only to divert
it from those authors who submitted their contributions early and who, because
of their very conscientiousness, are now finding that they were unable to include
some late advances in their topics.
