Series Foreword
With the rapid introduction of highly sophisticated computers, (tele)communication,
service, and manufacturing systems, a major shift has occurred in the way people use
technology and work with it. The objective of this book series on Human Factors and
Ergonomics is to provide researchers and practitioners with a platform where important
issues related to these changes can be discussed, and methods and recommendations can
be presented for ensuring that emerging technologies provide increased productivity,
quality, satisfaction, safety, and health in the new workplace and the Information Society.
The present volume is published at a veiy opportune time, when the Information
Society Technologies are emerging as a dominant force, both in the workplace, and in
everyday life activities. In order for these new technologies to be truly effective, they must
provide communication modes and interaction modalities across different languages and
cultures, and should accommodate the diversity of requirements of the user population at
large, including disabled and elderly people, thus making the Information Society uni
versally accessible, to the benefit of mankind.
The present volume provides an insightful account for designing for accessibility,
and the corporate benefits for designing accessibility are presented and illustrated
through case studies. The book presents 14 carefully selected and veiy useful figures and
1 7 tables. The content of the book is backed up again by 88 meticulously selected refer
ences which make it very manageable to browse through them.
The book should be of special value for policy makers to ensure the practical real
ization of IT accessibility for all segments of the society. To corporate researchers the
book indicates how and what to do for accessibility and how doing so makes good busi
ness sense. For the academic researcher it provides a framework for developing a research
program in IT accessibility.
