In ihm spiegeln sich viele Fragen und Probleme wider, mit denen die Bundeswehr und die deutsche Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik derzeit konfrontiert sind. Er ist Gegenstand kontroverser Debatten in Politik, Medien und Öffentlichkeit. Der Sammelband nimmt diese Debatten auf und formuliert aus unterschiedlichen Positionen heraus neue Perspektiven auf die gesellschaftliche und politische Legitimation des Einsatzes, die Realität des Einsatzes aus Sicht der Soldatinnen und Soldaten und das sich durch den Einsatz wandelnde Verhältnis von Politik, Militär und Gesellschaft. Dabei werden erstmals empirische Befragungsergebnisse zur aktuellen Einsatzwirklichkeit in Afghanistan ausgeführt.
