ananthropologicallytrainedhistoricalarchaeologistwhoworksinpost-Columbian
history, “modern-world archaeology.” His primary research interests lie in social
theory,thearchaeologicalanalysisofsocialinequality,andthematerialconditions
ofmodernity.Hisresearchactivitiesconcentrateonthedispossessedandoverlooked
in history and to date he has investigated NativeAmerican (American Plains and
Midwest),African(AmericanSouthandBrazil),andIrishmaterialconditions(Re-
publicofIreland).HeisthefounderandeditorofInternationalJournalofHistorical
Archaeologyandtheauthorofseveralbooksonhistoricalarchaeology.

Archaeology, Slavery, and Marronage:
A Complex Relationship

Sinceitsinceptioninthenineteenthcentury,archaeologyhasbeenassociatedwith
nationalistandimperialistendeavors.Itspractitioners,bothprofessionalandavoca-
tional,havebeenpronetotakepartintheeulogyoftheelites.Archaeologywasborn
inanenvironmentinwhichtheancientartworksofantiquitywerevaluedfortheir
beautyanduniqueness.Thecollectionofrareworksofarthasbeenanaristocratic
activitysincetheRenaissance.Formanyyears,archaeologistswerehappytosupply
museumgalleriesandthehomesofthewealthywithbeautifulobjectsfromthepast.
Inthewakeofthedevelopmentofthemodernuniversitysystem,withitsspecial-
ized, enlightenedfaculty, manyofwhomhadawillingnessanddesiretoservethe
newbourgeoisnation-state,archaeologywasasideeffectofphilologyandhistory.
Archaeologistsservedthestateinthesearchfortheancientrootsofnewlyestablished
nations,insideandoutsideofitsterritory,howeverdefined.Napoleonisperhapsthe
best expression of this early phase, inventing the French heritage inside the coun-
try(theGauls)andoutside(startingwiththeancientEgyptians). Champollionisa
goodexampleofarchaeology’searlyassociationwithnationalism,imperialism,and
philology. In deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, he supported the imperial
conquestofEgyptandhelpedappropriateanancientcivilizationforFrenchimperial
power.
In the quest to use archaeology in the service of the state, excavators and re-
searchersignoredthevastmajorityofpeoplewhohadlivedinthepast.Castingtheir
eyesonlyontheelitesofsociety,theyhadnoroomforthe“lowerorders,”suchas
theslavebuildersofthepyramids.
