Preface
Corrosion causes huge economic losses for many industries. According to a NACE
International study in 2016, the total global corrosion costs are estimated to be US
$2.5 trillion per annum, which is equivalent to a significant part of the global Gross
Domestic Product (GDP). Therefore, corrosion prevention is economically favourable
compared to the expenses for the costly maintenance measures. In this context, we
believe that reporting the most recent advances on corrosion control procedures from
various research efforts is essential. Shedding the light on alternative, sustainable
and non-classical scenarios for prevention/reduction of corrosion may help industry
sectors to optimize the corrosion control practices. The authors of this book are
academics or industrial experts in a particular field of corrosion.
This book reviews the latest results on various approaches towards sustainable
protection of metals and alloys using green inhibitors instead of the harmful inorganic
inhibitors. It also presents up-to-date reports on corrosion protection mechanisms
using advanced and environmentally friendly coatings, including graphene,
biopolymers and others. Moreover, it introduces the use of non-conventional and
alternative inhibition approaches such as vapour phase- and plant-based inhibitors,
self-healing smart coatings and plasma electrolytic oxidation. Furthermore, it
demonstrates how to utilize various analytics to monitor and inspect the corrosion
problems in many materials upon application of promising coatings. It also covers
the theory and the current practices that help in understanding the corrosion processes
and how to prevent or control corrosion, with numerous examples.
Among the versatile coatings available, graphene and biopolymer-based
coatings represent current eco-friendly alternatives to conventional anti-corrosive
coatings. Therefore, this book focuses on two main classes of materials which
are introduced in two parts: Part one provides an overview of the application of
biopolymers and plant-based materials as anticorrosive coatings. Part two looks at
the use of graphene and its nanocomposites for corrosion control. The use of these
materials showed efficient protection from corrosion while considering safety, health
and environmental concerns. Therefore, this book highlights the current progress in
the use of carbon-based and bio-polymeric materials for corrosion hindrance and
other types of coatings are considered as well.
With contributions from experts from both academia and industry, this book is
a valuable reference for those who are interested in the latest progress in corrosion
inhibition approaches using green inhibitors and graphene nanocomposites, including
professionals from the industrial sector as well as academic researchers in this field.
