ew Church of England statistics for 2015, published in November, show that just under
one million people attend services each week. The survey, carried out over four weeks in
October 2015, found 960,000 people attending church each week, with 820,000 adults

of the Good Shepherd, Colorado, defining the words in common use within the
church broken up under various headings:

These are general terms used in the church that don't fall into the other categories.

Lessons and Carols: The Festival of Lessons and Carols
Maundy Thursday: Thursday in Holy Week (see BCP p. 274). The name is from Latin
mandatum ("command"), referring to Christ's commandment concerning foot-washing.
It is also the day on which the first Lord's Supper was celebrated.
Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion (BCP pp. 270-73), the Sunday before Easter. In
the Episcopal Church, members of the congregation carry real palms during the service.
In some churches, the tradition is that palms from one year are saved, dried and later
burned to make the ashes used at the next year's Ash Wednesday service.
Passover: A Jewish festival commemorating the escape of the Jews from Egypt.
Pentecost: The conclusion of the Fifty Days of Easter and the commemoration of the
descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. Formerly known in the Episcopal Church as
Whitsunday. Also refers, as a season, to the Sundays and Weekdays following the Day of
Pentecost and ending on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. During this sea-
son the Church especially emphasizes the Holy Spirit's empowerment of all Christians for
ministry to each other and the communities and world in which they live.

Whitsunday: The old name for Pentecost Sunday, the day described in Acts 2. As of the
1979 Book of Common Prayer, the day became known as Pentecost.

Frederick William HOWELL was born in Main Street, in 1922, baptised at St Mary's

ough. One of his half sisters was Rose E WILSON (Dec) of Hardwick Road where he often

visited during his few leaves. Fred was working at James Bros Grocer's Shop corner of Sil-
ver Street and Market Street in Wellingborough.

As a young boy he earns pocket money working for 'Doey Butlin' in the bake house where

Whilst stationed at Newmarket in July 1941 he witnessed a Wellington bomber landing Find us on Facebook
that was very badly shot up and later learnt that the second pilot, a New Zealander, Sgt Pilot
James Ward was awarded a VC after he had climbed along the wing at circa 18,000 feet, to
extinguish a fire at the rear of the starboard engine he successfully re-entered the plane.

Fred also saw service in Egypt at the time of El Alamein. Among his various hobbies
was Cartophily, collecting postcards and cigarette cards, Philately, British Postal history, he
often visited various places throughout New Zealand giving presentations of his hobbies.

When Simon Bull was researching the Little Harrowden War Memorial, Fred was eager and
able to share his first hand knowledge of some of the men. In Simons words ' He was one of
the greatest generation and we all owe them a lot'.
