PREFACE
With this volume we present the last of three volumes dedicated to Professor Oswald
Szemerényi on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
The three thematically distinct volumes have been published separately. Volume I
"Prehistory, History, and Historiography of Language, Speech, and Linguistic Theory",
treats mainly topics in general linguistics, including considerations on the origin and
prehistory of language as well as contributions on linguistic historiography. Volume
"Historical Philology: Greek, Latin and Romance" embraces studies on the classical
languages Greek and Latin. Italic and the development of Latin to the Romance daughter
languages is also taken into consideration. In addition to topics in diachronic linguistics,
philological and historical aspects are also treated.
The present volume contains mostly studies relating to Indo-European and the IE
dialects. The volume concludes with a section on Finno-Ugric and Altaic languages.
We hope this volume will provide Professor Szemerényi some pleasure and will be
positively accepted by the linguistic community.
In producing this volume, unavoidable delays were encountered which regrettably
tried the patience of some of the authors. We would like to thank all o tfhe contributors
for their understanding in this regard and for their friendly collaboration which ultimately
ensured the success of the volume.
The typesetting was carried out by Joachim Haamann computer services of Aachen.

completion of this difficult task.
