L' Academie de droit europeen a ete creee par l'Institut en 1990. Son activite
principale consiste en I'organisation de cours d'ete consacres au droit des
Communautes europeennes et a la protection des droits de I 'homme en
Europe.
Elle offre I'opportunite de participer ades cours donnes par les plus
grandes autorites mondiales en la matiere. Les conferenciers pn:!sentent leur
propre analyse et appreciation du droit communautaire, de la convention
europeenne des droits de I'homme et d'autres sujets concernant le droit
europeen. Les conferences, sous une forme revisee et plus detaillee, sont
l'objet de cette publication.
Tous les cours sont en anglais ou en francais. Les participants doivent
maltriser I 'une de ces langues et avoir au moins une connaissance passive
de I'autre. Ils doivent resider a Florence pendant la tenue de l'Academie et
participer a I'ensemble de ses activites. La participation est ouverte tant aux
etudiants ou enseignants en droit qu'aux juristes praticiens. Le nombre de
participants est limite, et la selection est faite sur la base des merites res
pectifs des candidatures recues.
Les participants qui possedent deja une connaissance approfondie dans
les domaines du droit communautaire et des droits de I 'homme peuvent
demander a se soumettre ades epreuves ecrites en vue de I' obtention du
diplöme de I' Academie en droit europeen. Ce diplöme est susceptible d' etre
delivre avec mention. Lors de la rMaction de leur candidature, les candidats
sont donc appeles a preciser s'ils souhaitent se presenter aux epreuves du
diplöme. Dans I 'affirmative, ils doivent preciser dans le detail les en
seignements qu'ils ont deja suivis en droit communautaire et sur la conven
tion europeenne des droits de I'homme, ainsi que I'experience qu'ils ont deja
acquise dans ces domaines.

The Academy of European Law
The Academy of European Law was established by the European University
Institute in 1990. Its main activity is the holding of summer courses in the
law of the European Community and the protection of human rights in
Europe.
The Academy offers the opportunity of attending courses given by lead
ing authorities from all over the world. Lecturers offer their own evaluation
and analysis of Community law, the European Convention on Human
Rights and other topics concerning European law. The lectures are pub
lished in the present annual publication.
All courses are held in English or French. Students must be fluent in one
of these languages and have at least a passive knowledge of the other.
Participants are expected to stay in Florence for the duration of the course
and should attend all the courses. Participation in the summer session is
open to law students, law teachers and those in legal practice. Enrolment
numbers are limited and admission is based on merit.
A limited number of participants who already have so me advanced
knowledge in the fields of Community law and the law of the European
Convention on Human Rights may request to sit a written examination.
Successful candidates will be awarded the Diploma of the Academy in
European Law. Exceptionally the Diploma may be awarded cum laude.
Applicants should indicate if they wish to be candidates for the Diploma in
their application. Those who wish to be considered for the Diploma must
include in their applications details of courses they have already attended in
Community law and on the European Convention on Human Rights
together with other experience they have in these fields.
