ABSTRACT
UNDERSTANDING THE VICTIMS OF DOMSTIC VIOLENCE
IN KOREAN CHRISTIAN CONTEXT: AN INTERVIEW STUDY

The purpose of this project was to understand Korean Christian women’s experience as
victims of domestic violence. Using a qualitative research method, data were collected through
in-depth interviews with six victims. The following themes surfaced in analyzing the data: the
husbands’ various ways of inflicting domestic violence; the patterns of victims’ experiences; the
influence of husbands’ family members and external influences; and theological interpretation.
The author proposed the following changes: appropriate responses by the church so that the
church does not re-victimize the women, alternative interpretations to root out embedded
theology, and pastors who understand their responsibilities as counselor and theologian. In
conclusion, I suggested that domestic violence damages the society as a whole and that courage
is needed in the pastoral leadership to bring about constructive changes. In addition, the church
community must be conscious of the lack of critical reflection on abuses of power. Finally,
pastors should help create a space of resistance that discloses and publicizes problems.

국문 초록
한국 기독교 내 가정폭력 피해경험 여성의 이해를 돕기 위한 면담 연구

본 프로젝트의 목적은 가정폭력 피해경험 여성들의 이야기들을 통해 그들의 경
험을 이해하는 것이다. 이를 위해 질적 연구 방법으로 6명의 피해 여성들과 심층면담
을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 도출한 자료 분석을 통해 다음의 주제가 표면화되었다. 남
편의 다양한 폭력행사 방법, 아내의 피해 양상, 남편의 다른 가족들과 외적 영향, 그리
고 신학적 해석. 저자는 교회 내에서 가정폭력 피해경험 여성들의 재피해를 막기 위한
대책의 필요성, 내재적 신학에 대한 해석적 변화의 필요성, 그리고 상담가와 신학자로
서의 목회자의 책임에 대해 피력하였다. 결론적으로 가정폭력을 개인의 문제가 아닌
사회의 문제로 맞서야 하며, 사회적 변화를 추구하기 위하여 교회 지도자들의 용기가
필요함을 제안하였다. 또한 교회 공동체의 권력의 남용에 대한 비판적 성찰의 부재에
대해 문제의식을 거론하였다. 마지막으로 목회자는 폭력의 문제를 드러내고 공론화하는
저항 공간을 형성할 수 있도록 도와야 한다.

SUMMARY
Since the Act on the Prevention of Domestic Violence and the Protection of Victims was
enacted in 1997, domestic violence has no longer been just a personal matter in Korean society.
So how does the church respond to these changes in society? As a pastor and director of the
Domestic Violence Counseling Center, I have seen first-hand the absence of change in the
church. This study investigated stories of domestic violence through the voices of women who
had survived it.
In-depth interviews were conducted with six women who had experienced domestic
violence. I chose a phenomenological method of qualitative research and therefore focused on
the experiences of the women as reported in interviews.
Analysis of interviews revealed several dynamics at play within situations of domestic
violence. First, the woman became an object of resentment and stress to her husband, such that
home became a place not of safety but of threats and control. The patriarchal structure of power
allowed for the husband's various acts of violence. Second, the woman became damaged as she
internalized her husband’s evaluation of her as an object and a subordinate. Patriarchal religious
values take for granted that women will oppress themselves, and women have adapted to this
expectation, accepted the divine order, and acted as conspirators of patriarchy. Third, a vertical
relationship was formed in the marriage by the husband’s coercion and the patriarchal society.
Moreover, the more vertical the relationship between the sexes is, the more power and status
men have to exercise violence. Finally, divorce represented a failed life, so women’s options
were severely limited.

According to Kang Nam Soon, it is rather easy to blame and demonize an actor; she calls
this destructive anger. What is needed, rather, is reflective anger, which focuses on and analyzes
the action itself and can be learned together through solidarity. Therefore, consistent with a
feminist theological perspective, first, the task is to make sure that women are not made to re-
experience their abuse within the church community. We should no longer allow spiritual
violence that forces victimized women a to pray, obey, and sacrifice more for their perpetrators.
We must help the victims tell their story in their own voice. Second, we must develop intentional
theology, not the embedded theology based on one's own values. Victims live with embedded
theology based on experiences in their lives. K. Samuel Lee is interested in what victims’
barriers are and argues that the church needs to help victims understand their barriers so that they
can live a full life of faith in the church. It is necessary to form a new intentional theology by
questioning and distance from the embedded theology. Third, pastors must be required to
respond to victims' stories. The response should not be limited to just listening to their stories,
but should also include understanding the complex relational interactions in the victims’ lives.
Pastors must be able to recognize their own limitations and find ways to cooperate with public
resources.
In conclusion, I suggest that the church not treat domestic violence as an individual
matter, but rather as a vulnerability of society that the church needs to face with courage. Firt, we
must recover to wholeness those whose stories reveal they have been treated as objects. The
church should use its prophetic voice to spearhead institutional changes in the community.
Second, we must encourage victims to become more aware of their abuse. The absence of critical
reflection on the abuse of power leads some victims to not feel the need for any change. To gain
a critical perspective, we must share our thoughts. This power of collective reflection will guide
ii
us to greater awareness; therefore, critical thinking is crucial. Third, in order to bring about a
change in patriarchal attitude, we need efforts to reveal and publicize problems. The pastor
should provide psychological support for victims to form a space of resistance. To this end, I
suggest monitoring the gender-discriminatory language of pastors and enhancing awareness
through gender-sensitivity training.
This project analyzed the problem of the church and domestic violence from the
perspective of victims, and did not include the voices of pastors. I hope that future work will
expand this discussion and include the perspective of pastors, who must work together to
institute the necessary changes.

국문 요약
1997 년 ‘가정폭력 방지 및 피해자 보호 등에 관한 법률’이 제정된 이후 한국
사회에서도 가정폭력은 더 이상 집안일이 아니게 되었다. 그렇다면 교회는 이러한
사회의 변화에 어떻게 응답하고 있는가? 목회자이자 가정폭력 상담소 소장으로서 나는
그 변화의 부재를 교회 내에서 발견하는 현실에서 의문을 가지게 되었다. 본 연구는
가정폭력의 피해경험 여성들의 목소리로부터 그 이야기를 듣고자 하였다.
6 명의 가정폭력 피해경험 여성들과 심층 면담을 진행하였다. 면담 내용은 질적
연구 중 현상학적 방법으로 드러난 현상의 본질에 집중하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 가장
안전해야 할 장소인 가정 안에서 여성이라는 이유로 남편의 화풀이 대상이자
스트레스를 푸는 대상이 되었고, 협박과 통제를 경험하고 있었다. 가부장제적인 권력
구조 안에서 남편의 분노 조절 어려움과 함께 다양한 폭력 행사가 드러났다. 둘째,
다양한 피해를 경험하며 여성들은 남편의 평가가 곧 자신의 평가가 되기도 하였으며,
그러한 가치를 내면화 하였다. 여성들이 자신을 스스로 억압하는 구조를 당연시하는
남성 중심의 가부장제화 된 종교적 가치를 통해 그 구조에 순응하고, 신적 질서를
받아들이며 가부장제의 공모자 역할을 하였다. 셋째, 강요와 사회적 담론에 의해
수직적인 관계를 형성하였다. 나아가 이혼은 인생 실패라는 통념으로 참고만 살았으며,
성 역할의 기대가 높을수록 남성이 여성보다 더 많은 힘과 지위를 가지고 폭력을
행사하는 것으로 드러났다.
강남순은 파괴적 분노를 표출하여 행위자를 비난하고 악마화하는 것은 오히려
쉬운 일임을 지적한다. 파괴적 분노가 아닌 그 행위 자체에 초점을 두고 분석하는
성찰적 분노가 필요하며 이는 연대를 통해 함께 배워갈 수 있다. 따라서 여성 신학적
관점과 함께 발전시켜 나가보면 첫째, 교회 공동체 내에서 재경험에 대한 응답이

요구된다. 더이상 피해 여성들에게 가해자를 위해 더 기도하며 복종하고 희생하도록
동질성의 공동체를 강요하는 영적 폭력을 행사해서는 안 된다. 피해자들이 자신의
목소리로 자신의 이야기를 찾도록 도와야 한다. 둘째, 자신이 가진 가치에 근거한
내재된 신학이 아닌 의도적 신학으로의 변화가 필요하다. 피해자들은 그들의 삶에서
경험한 것에 근거한 내재된 신학을 가지고 힘겹게 살아가고 있다. K. Samuel. Lee 는
그들이 가진 장벽이 무엇인지에 관심을 가지고 그 장벽이 어떻게 피해자들의 적응을
방해하며 제한하고 있는지 알게 하고, 그 장벽에 대체할 방법을 도와야 한다고
주장한다. 내재된 신학에 대해 거리 두기와 질문을 통해 새롭게 작용하는 의도적인
신학을 형성해 나가야 할 것이다. 셋째, 피해자들의 이야기에 목회자들은 응답할
책임을 요구받는다. 그 응답은 단순히 행위적인 것뿐 아니라 피해자들이 살아가고
있는 복잡한 관계적 상호작용을 포함해야 한다. 목회자들은 자신의 한계를 인정하는
가운데 공적 자원과 협력해 나갈 길을 모색할 수 있을 것이다.
결론적으로 첫째, 교회가 가정폭력을 개인의 문제로 다룰 것이 아니라 사회적
취약함으로 인식하고 맞서는 용기가 필요함을 제안한다. 존재로서 살아가지 못하는
그들의 목소리로부터 들려오는 이야기를 통해 상실된 존재에 대한 무한한 관심을
되찾아야 한다. 이는 교회가 선지자적인 목소리를 통해 공동체의 제도적 변화로까지
이어져야 함을 의미한다. 둘째, 피해자들에 대한 인식의 변화도 요구된다. 힘의 남용에
대한 비판적 성찰의 부재는 어떤 문제의식이나 변화의 필요성도 느끼지 못하게 된다.
비판적 시각을 갖기 위해서는 사유를 공유해야 한다. 이러한 사유의 힘은 연대할 수
있도록 우리를 안내할 것이다. 따라서 비판적 사고가 필요함을 제안한다. 셋째,
가부장제적 태도의 변화를 가져오기 위해서는 문제를 드러내고 공론화하는 노력이
필요하다. 목회자들은 피해자들이 저항 공간을 형성할 수 있도록 심리적 지지대가
