of Myristicaceae.

flowing streams

• “Relic Forests” and
• “Live Museum” of ancient
Tree Species
• Home for
proto-angiosperms
The species show special kinds
of adaptations because of
flooded or water-logged
conditions of the Swamp
These fresh-water littoral evergreen forests once formed an
extensive network along the streams of Western Ghats and hence
were dubbed as lifeline of fresh-water organisms.
Any thing that disrupts this net work can potentially harm the entire
ecosystem
But today they are critically endangered Habitats
Restoring these net work is vital through a
“Recovery-Action Oriented Programme”
Objectives
• Mapping freshwater swamps, critical micro-corridors linking
these swamps, identifying the threats
• Characterizing the swamp fragments and micro-corridors for
species composition, resource use, develop an enrichment
protocol for each of the micro-corridor with respect to the
species, frequency and geometry of planting
• Standardizing protocol for propagation of swamp species
through participatory approach
• Create micro-corridors through enrichment planting through
participatory approach, creation of new swamp populations -
habitat recovery
• Achieve a lasting restoration of the swamps
CEPF Investment Strategy
• Myristica swamps: Major focus in the CEPF strategy
• Recovery actions: Main areas identified in the
strategy 2.1.
• Monitoring and assessing the conservation status of
globally threatened species.
• Sharavathi valley: one of the priority sites of the
CEPF.
