Acknowledgments
This monograph would not have been possible without
the substantial practical efforts and admirable scholar-
ship of Dr. Helmut Krasser, our dear colleague and
Director of the Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual
History of Asia (IKGA) of the Austrian Academy of
Sciences from 2007 to 2014, the year of his premature
passing. Dr. Krasser not only arranged for the precious
Madhyamakāvatārabhāṣya manuscript to be included in
the group of Sanskrit manuscripts from Tibet being edit-
ed in Vienna under the agreement of cooperation be-
tween the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the China
Tibetology Research Center (CTRC) in Beijing, but ac-
tively participated as a main editor and researcher from
the inception of the project until just a few months be-
fore his death. We are pleased that many of his editorial
contributions, especially for the first two chapters, can
now be shared with the readers of the present volume.
Dr. Li of the CTRC, where the black-and-white photo-
copies of the Madhyamakāvatārabhāṣya manuscript are
stored, transcribed the manuscript’s text and, in the early
years of the project, regularly sojourned in Austria to
confer with the Vienna team. Our working method was
two-fold: we prepared the diplomatic and critical edi-
tions first in closed sessions and then presented our pro-
gress at weekly round-table meetings (the famous IKGA
Arbeitskreis), which were open to interested scholars at
the IKGA and the University of Vienna and to visiting
international scholars, as well as to graduate students
from the University of Vienna. Our editorial work on the
text of the codex unicus profited greatly over the years
