When I was a little kid 5 or 6, I was
constantly fascinated with the contents of
my fathers bedroom dresser drawer. Among the
hankies and neckties, there could be found
old notes to friends, coins, a few Cuban
dollars from his honeymoon in Cuba, assort-
ed pictures of my Mom (in younger years) and
a high school yearbook. It seemed that every
time I explored his drawer, I found some
thing new.
Sifting through these treasures again
one day, I uncovered a round piece of wood,
with a purple picture of an eye and some
lettering on it. Curious evaluation indenti-
fied it to be a commemorative celebration a
centennial anniversary of either the Borough of Norristown or Consho-
hocken, Pennsylvania in the early 1950's. For some reason, I was com-
pletely intrigued with this nickel and vowed to learn more about it.
I still have that piece, but it is in some timecapsule (box in
attic) in my house that has escaped my attention for now.
A little later, I think maybe in 1965 or 1956, there was an art-
icle in the now defunct Pliladelphia Bulletin about a wooden money
club. I wrote to somebody, I can't remember who, back then and receiv-
ed my first Bunyan's Chips. Unfortunately, I was one member too late
for milestone membership number 1000.
I remember all the fun I used to have as a kid scrounging up
quarters and stamps for self return envelopes to get the latest nick-
els every month in Chips. I got a lot of wooden nickels since then,
which I plan to give to my grandchildren, in about 100 years, for
their fascination.
My collecting of things started with wooden money and expanded,
at age 8 or 9, to collecting Superman and Batman comic books. I kept
this collection intact and it is worth a pretty penny today. I regret
not collecting Marvel.
|
Currently, I am collecting toys, specifically old blimps and
ever since the demise of Challenger, space shuttles. I think I have
acquired over 300 space shuttle toys by now, which are also in the
attic as all collectors know "space runs out". (Continued next page)

I have a beautiful wife, Charlotte, and three wonderful boys,
Zachary, Radnor and Remmington. My wife also collects things. She
"collects" houses. We have a real estate investment business, "J R.
Law and Associates", whereby we buy sell, fix-up and rent out pro-
,
perties. We are hoping, that the suburban Philadelphia real estate
market gets a little better in the 1990's so we can continue to eat.
Dear Editor,
Although I have belonged to IOWMC. for many years, I have never sent in
an artical before. I hope that this item will help to fill a space and of
interest to the clubs membership.
About four years ago, a letter appeared in a Coin publication, asking if
a coin club in America would be interested in corresponding with a coin club
in Leicester Encland. The only answer came from the Mismatic Coin Club in
Camillus, New York. I was president of the club at the time and we have kept
in touch, sent boxes of coin related items to them and recieved the same from
them. Of course, wooden nickels were always included.
Last September, my brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Wilda Marshall and
I made a trip to Leicester, England. The club had a party for us. I took a
large supply of wooden nickels. They do not have them and were delighted them.
Another item that they do not have are elongated coins.
We had a wonderful time. We visited, England, Wales, Scotland and North-
ern Ireland. I am happy to say that the man who wrote that letter will be
viaiting me in June of this year and my club is planning a great party for
him. Keep doing a wonderful job as Editor.)

Presidents Message
MY DAY AT THE ANTIQUE MALL
The other day in my travels, I passed the Amish community of Middlebury,
IN. I noticed several antique shops and I said to myself this will be my day
to pick up some good wooden nickels.
As I walked into the first shop I asked; "Do you have any wooden nickels?"
*' ies" was the reply, "We have a couple." So she looked and looked but could
not find them. "I'm sorry we must have sold them."
I walked into the next shop; "Do you have any wooden nickels?" "We used to
have some, but not anymore."
The third shop "Do you have any wooden nickels?" The reply "Are we
supposed to?"
The fourth shop had one. The Wakarusa, Indiana Maple Surup Festival of
1982 for seventy five cents. I thought thatwas a good price and purchased.
As I left the little town of Middlebury the statement made by our Club
Secretary, Robbin Quinn, came to mind: "There out there, so you just have to
find them.
WHERE DOES OUR MEMBERS COME FROM ??
A question that has been on my mind for some time is; "where does the In-
ternational Organization of Wooden Money Collector's members come from?"
We call our organization internatioinal and that is true as 17 are from
Canada, and a few are or were in the arm service stationed in outher parts
of the world, one that was in Brazil passed away. Research of our membership
as of January 1st shows 371 and reveals some oddities.
No it isn't CA; FL; NY; or OH; that has the most members but PA; that has
49 members. All states except AK; AR; DE; ID; MS; NM; have at least one mem-
ber. Those not having any members is really peculiar with thire heavy rural
populations and tremedous historical backgrounds.
The top five are PA. (49), CA (29), OH. (25), NY. (23), WA. (15). Canada
-‘'ready mentioned as having (17). Puerto Rico has (2), Listing following

BUNYAN'S CHIPS
413 DEL.AVE.
ELKTON, MD. 21921-6004
Official Publication Of
INTERNATIONAL ORGAN ZAT ON OF WOODEN MONEY COLLECTORS
I I
LOUISVILLE, KY.
The August-September 1992 issue of Bunyan's
Chips had a portrait of Clever Trevor Street
an eleven year old (at that time) that collects
wooden money.
Well, another Street has surfaced. Triston L. Street (5 years
old) brother of Trevor also collects wooden money and his oldest
brother is nice enough to share his extra wooden money collection
until Tristan "gets off the ground".
Tristan's mother states ; "Trestan would be thrilled to receive
any mail containing wooden nickels". (12409 Taylorsville Road,
Louisville, KY. 40299) He asks his mother every day; is there any
wooden nickels in the mail today?.
Tristan will collect anything and everything especially the toys
that are associated with Hamburger Happy Meals.

Most of my collection is built on mail order dealings and a SASE (Stamped Self Addressed
Envelope) is a common way to make polite inquiries of your fellow collectors.
After one recent comedy of errors I will be changing my method of addressing SASE. Previous-
ly I have just grabbed an envelope with my return address in the upper left comer, wrote
out my address in the usual address place, stamped it, folded it up and sent it on its way.
Never again will I do it that way. Now I write to whan I am sending the SASE in the return
address area and follow the rest of the steps.
Why? Recently I went to the Post Office and found a postage due notice in my box. One of the
items was an SASE that the Post Office received in early December. (Why it took six weeks to
get a notice into my box is still under investigation. I opened the envelope and found four
)
woods from the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo; a note signed Bill, telling me that more woods are
available; and a three page list of rectangular woods. No where in the entire contents, is
there a name or address for Bill. Going to the Post Mark which is Colorado Springs, Co. and
reviewing the IOWMC roster reveals no Bill from that area.
Who is Bill? Where is he? If I had placed his name and address in the return address area of
my SASE I would know. A word to the wise.
