Foreword
With the increasing accountability of humans to preserve our environment and
natural resources, the move to greater sustainability has been seen as an essential
partofourdailyprogressioninlife.Thisshiftinourlifestylewillseelessrelianceon
energy-intensiveandhighemissionsoperationswhichisourpartincontributingtoa
cleaner environment for all to live in. The passion in discovering and developing
sustainablebiomanufacturingprocessestoproducevaluablecompoundsisnotjusta
scientificidea,butadevotionbymanyamazingresearchers.
While they may live and work in different countries and different fields, we all
sharethesamephilosophytoembracesustainabilityinourprocesses.Bothofthem
have inspired me in my search for alternative pathways in generating sustainable
solutions to the existing issues faced by the industries in processing goods. The
biomanufacturing process utilizes biological matter to produce commercially vital
biomolecules for use in a range of applications including food and beverage,
pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical, and industrial areas. Over the long and fruitful
career,Prof.PauLokeShowandDr.VijaiSinghhaveencounteredmanychallenges
in the manufacturing industry and together. They have come up with a team and
plansonhowwecanreshapetheindustrialbiomanufacturingtomovetowardsmore
sustainablealternativesforfeedstockandpathways.
This book can help researchers and industrialists to create a shared vision and
understandingofinnovativeprocessesthatareadaptabletotheexistingconventional
steps in producing biomolecules. The mature and uprising biotechnological frame-
work, platforms, and examples shared here can structure and guide them to imple-
ment new technologies in converting resources to various biomolecules with high

Biomanufacturingisatypeofmanufacturingthatutilizesbiologicalsystemsinclud-
ing microorganisms, resting cells, animal cells, plant cells, tissues, enzymes, or
invitrosynthetic toproduce commercially scale importantbiomolecules for usein
medicines,foodandbeverageprocessing,andindustrialapplications.Thecellsare
usedduringtheproductionthatmayhavebeennaturallyoccurringorderivedusing
geneticengineering, synthetic biology, genome editing and /metabolicengineering
techniques. The global demand of biomanufacturing size is USD 18.28 billion in
2020whichisexpectedtoreachUSD39.18billionin2028.Ithasbeenusedfrom
longtime,butcurrentdemandishighandbio-basedproductsproductionwiththeaid
oflivingorganismthatshouldutilizewastematerialsforscaleupofbiomoleculesin
ordertofulfilglobalcurrentdemandsfromacheaperresource.
Thisbookdiscussespromisingtechnologiesforthemanipulationofcellswiththe
help of genetic engineering, synthetic biology, genome editing, and metabolic
engineering. The initial chapters of the book introduce strain design and improve-
ment, designer cells, and downstream processing. The subsequent chapters cover
artificial intelligence-assisted production, cell factories, biosensors for monitoring
biomolecules,differentcellsfactories,biosyntheticpathways,cell-free system,and
genome-editing approaches for scale-up biomanufacturing. Lastly, the book
discusses the opportunities and challenges of implementing biological systems for
theproductionofbiomolecules.
This book aims to confront this pressing need, and it will help students,
researchers, scientists, clinicians, stakeholders, and policymakers to understand
biomanufacturingforsustainableproductionofbiomoleculesandapplyatdifferent
