About the Editors
Huangxian Ju is a Cheung Kong Professor and
the director of State Key Laboratory of Analytical
Chemistry for Life Science, Nanjing University.
He is a Fellow of the International Society of
Electrochemistry and a Fellow of the Royal
Society of Chemistry. His research interests
include analytical biochemistry and
nanobiosensing, focusing on signal amplification
and life analytical chemistry. He has published
745 papers in peer-reviewed journals (466 papers in journals with
IF>5), obtained 27 patents, authored or edited 6 English books and
8 Chinese books, with >35,000 citations in SCI journals and an
h-index of 96 (Google Scholar h-index 105, >40,000 citations). He
has received the first outstanding achievement award of Chinese
chemical sensors in 2019, 3 first-class S&T prizes from Jiangsu
Province Government, 3 first-class prizes in natural science from
Education Ministry of China, 3 first-class S&T prizes from Chinese
Association for Instrumental Analysis, 3 second-class and 2 third-class
S&T prizes from Jiangsu Province Government. He is also the
director of Electroanalytical Chemistry Committee, vice director of
Chemical Sensors Committee, and vice president of Analytical
Instrument TC, Chinese Society of Instruments; vice directors of
Analytical Chemistry Discipline Committee and Organic Analysis
Committee, Chinese Chemical Society; vice director of Biosensor

Jinghong Li, Academician of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences, is currently a Cheung
Kong Professor in the Department of Chemistry
at Tsinghua University, China. He is the Head of
Analysis Center, Tsinghua University. He
received his BSc from University of Science and
Technology of China in 1991, and PhD from
Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry
(CIAC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in
1996. He was a postdoc or research scientist at University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign, University of California at Santa Barbara,
Clemson University, and Evonyx Inc., USA. He has been a professor
at CIAC from May 2001 and Tsinghua University from July 2004.
His current research interests include electroanalytical chemistry and
bioanalysis, nanoanalysis and biosensing, physical electrochemistry
and interfacial electrochemistry, material electrochemistry and
nanoscopic electrochemistry, energy conversion and storage. He is an
Associate Editor or Advisory Board member of Chem. Soc. Rev.
(RSC), ACS Sensors (ACS), Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Current
Analytical Chemistry, and Small Methods (Wiley-VCH). He has
published over 400 papers in international peer-reviewed journals
with >50,000 citations, giving him an h-index of 115. He is a Fellow
of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Highly Cited Researcher
2015–2020 in Chemistry, Materials (Thomson Reuters).

Preface
Biochemical sensors are small devices that incorporate a biological
recognition element with a signal transducer, and can be used for
direct measurement of the specific analytes in the sample matrix. With
the finding and artificial synthesis of new biorecognition elements,
the significant advancement in synthesis of nanomaterials and under-
standing of their properties, and the innovation of signal transduction
principles, biochemical sensors have become one of the most active
areas of analytical research.
The unique properties of nanomaterials offer excellent platforms
as electronic and optical signal transduction to design a new genera-
tion of biosensing devices. The progress in nanotechnology, molecu-
lar biology, and cell biology endows such devices with high sensitivity,
excellent selectivity and long-term stability. They hold a leading posi-
tion among sensors presently available and have found a vast range of
important applications in life science, biomedicine, and the fields of
clinical, industrial, environmental and food analyses. Future progress
in biochemical sensors would require extensive multidisciplinary
efforts for meeting emerging needs ranging from early detection of
disease biomarkers or minimally-invasive continuous monitoring of
biomolecules, to early detection of biological warfare agents.
The goal of this book is to cover the full scope of biochemical
sensors and offer a survey of the principles, design and applications of
the most popular types of biosensing devices. It is presented in two
volumes, and written by 20 distinguished scientists as well as their
co-workers. Its topics include the design of signal transducers, signal

tags and signal amplification strategies, the structure of biosensing
interfaces with new biorecognition elements such as aptamers and
DNAzymes, and different newly emerging nanomaterials such as Au
nanoclusters, carbon nitride, silicon, upconversion nanoparticles and
two-dimensional materials, and the applications in wearable detec-
tions, biofuel cells, biomarker analyses, bioimaging, single cell analysis
and in vivo sensing. This is the first volume: Fundament and
Development. By discussing recent advances, it is hoped to bridge the
common gap between research literature and standard textbooks.
Research into biochemical sensors and their biomedical applications is
proceeding in a number of exciting directions, as reflected by the
content of this book.
This book is published in honor of the 90th birthday of Professor
Shaojun Dong, who performed many pioneering studies on modified
electrodes and biochemical biosensors. Prof. Dong was born in
Qingdao, China on June 26, 1931, and graduated from Furen
University in the Department of Chemistry (Beijing) in 1952. She
then joined Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry (CIAC),
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) till now. She was the head of the
Key Laboratory of Electroanalytical Chemistry (KLEAC) (1986–
1998–2001), academic advisor of the State Key laboratory of
Electroanalytical Chemistry (2002–), and member of the Academy of
Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) elected in 1999.
Majoring in the research fields of electrochemistry and electroanaly-
sis, she has made important contributions in chemically modified
electrode, nanointerface electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry,
electrocatalysis and biosensor, etc. and published over 1000 papers
in international SCI journals with citations over 60,000 times and
h-index 120. She has been a visiting professor at the University of
Kansas (USA), Dijon University (France) and Yamanashi University
(Japan). She has also been on the International Advisory Board of six
journals including Chem. Commun., Electrochem. Commun., Biosens.
Bioelectron., Bioelectrochemistry, Talanta, and Sensors. She has
presented plenary, keynote and invited lectures over 100 times at
international academic conferences and gave many seminars in 27
different countries and regions. Her awards include: 1 International;

Awards from CAS and Jilin Province. She received Lifetime
Achievement Awards in Electrochemistry at the 18th National
Electrochemistry Conference in China (2015) and in Electroanalytical
Chemistry at the 14th National Conference of Electroanalytical
Chemistry in China (2020). She has been selected 6 times continu-
ously as a Highly Cited Researcher by ISI Web of Science in the past
16 years (2002–2017).
The book is aimed at all scientists and engineers who are interested
in developing and using biochemical sensors. It is also interesting for
students studying analytical chemistry, biochemistry, material science,
micro- and nanotechnology, biomedicine, and clinical diagnostics. It
is one of the monograph series published by Huangxian Ju or with
