De reden van Biggles’ tocht naar dit afgelegen stukje aarde was al even vreugdeloos als de woestijn zelf. Enkele Europese vluchtelingen, die sinds de revolutie in China weinig goeds meer te verwachten hadden, hadden een voorlopig onderkomen gezocht in het eenzame heiligdom, in de hoop althans daar voor enige tijd veilig te zijn. Maar met het verstrijken van de tijd werd hun toestand er niet rooskleuriger op en slechts een spoedige bevrijding kon nog uitkomst bieden. Het feit dat hun schuilplaats duizenden kilo meters landinwaarts gelegen was, sloot iedere andere reddingspoging dan een per vliegtuig bij voorbaat uit. Het spreekt dus vanzelf dat majoor Bigglesworth de aangewezen man was om dit karwei op te knappen. Wie Biggles kent, zal weten dat hij nooit het woord ‘onmogelijk’ gebruikt. Maar er zijn mensen die zich afvragen of Biggles ooit aan deze ongewone opdracht begonnen was als hij vantevoren de wel heel speciale moeilijkheden had gekend die de Gobi woestijn voor hem in petto had.
