Preface
The computationalparadigm considered here is a conceptual, theoretical, and formal
framework situated above machines and living creatures (two instantiations), suffi-
cientlysolid,andstillnonexclusive,thatallowsus:
1. to help neuroscientists to formulate intentions, questions, experiments, methods,
and explanation mechanisms assuming that neural circuits are the psychological
supportofcalculus;
2. to help scientists and engineers from the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and
knowledge engineering (KE) to model, formalize, and program the computable
partofhumanknowledge;
3. toestablishaninteractionframeworkbetweennaturalsystemcomputationandar-
tificialsystemcomputationinbothdirections,fromArtificialtoNaturalandfrom
NaturaltoArtificial.
With these global purposes, Prof. José Mira organizedthe 1st InternationalWork
Conference on the Interplaybetween Natural and Artificial Computation,which took
place in Las Palmasde Gran Canaria,Canary Islands(Spain),10 yearsago,tryingto
contributetobothdirectionsoftheinterplay.
Today,thehybridizationbetweensocialsciencesandsocialbehaviorswithrobotics,
neurobiologyandcomputing,ethicsandneuroprosthetics,cognitivesciencesandneu-
rocomputing,neurophysiologyandmarketingisgivingrisetonewconceptsandtools
thatcanbeappliedtoICTsystems,aswellastonaturalsciencefields.ThroughIWINAC
weprovideaforuminwhichresearchindifferentfieldscanconvergetocreatenewcom-
putationalparadigmsthatareonthefrontierbetweenNaturalsciencesandInformation
technologies.
Asa multidisciplinaryforum,IWINACisopentoanyestablishedinstitutionsand
researchlaboratoriesactivelyworkinginthefieldofthisinterplay.Butbeyondachiev-
ingcooperationbetweendifferentresearchrealms,wewishtoactivelyencouragecoop-
erationwiththeprivatesector,particularlySMEs,asawayofbridgingthegapbetween
frontier science and societal impact, and young researchers in order to promote this
scientificfield.
In this edition, four main themes outline the conference topics: gerontechnology
ande-therapy,Brain–ComputerInterfaces,Biomedicalimagingapplicationsforhealth,
andartificialvisionandrobotics.
Gerontechnologyis an interdisciplinaryfield combininggerontologyandtechnol-
ogy.Gerontechnologyaimsatmatchingsystemstohealth,housing,mobility,commu-
nication,leisure, andwork ofthe elderly.The developmentofcomputingsystems for
gerontechnologyhasturnedintoachallengingactivityrequiringdisciplinesasdiverse
asartificialintelligence,human–computerinteraction,andwirelesssensornetworksto
worktogetherinordertoprovidesolutionsabletosatisfythisgrowingsocietaldemand.
Brain–ComputerInterfacesimplementanewparadigmincommunicationnetworks,
namely Brain Area Networks. In this paradigm, our brain inputs data (external

stimuli), performs multiple media-access control by means of cognitive tasks (selec-
tiveattention),processestheinformation(perception),takesadecision(cognition)and,
eventually,transmitsdatabacktothesource(bymeansofaBCI),thusclosingthecom-
municationloop.Theobjectivesincludeneuro-technologies(e.g.innovativeEEG/ECG/
fNIRSheadsets,integratedstimulation-acquisitiondevices,etc.),Tele-services(e.g.ap-
plications in Telemedicine, tele-rehabilitation programs, tele-control, mobile applica-
tions,etc.),innovativebiosignalprocessingalgorithms,trainingtechniques,andnovel
emergingparadigms.
Imageunderstandingisaresearchareainvolvingbothfeatureextractionandobject
identification within images from a scene, and a posterior treatment of this informa-
tion in order to establish relationships between these objects with a specific goal. In
biomedicalandindustrialscenarios,themainpurposeofthisdisciplineis,givenavisual
problem,to manageall aspects of priorknowledge,fromstudy start-up andinitiation
through data collection, quality control, expert independent interpretation, to design
anddevelopmentofsystemsinvolvingimageprocessingcapableoftacklingwiththese
tasks.BrainimagingusingEEGtechniquesordifferentMRIsystemscanhelpinsome
neuraldisorders,likeepilepsy,Alzheimer,etc.
Overthelastdecadestherehasbeenanincreasinginterestinusingmachinelearn-
ingmethodscombinedwithcomputervisiontechniquestocreateautonomoussystems
thatsolvevisionproblemsindifferentfields.Thisresearchinvolvesalgorithmsandar-
chitecturesforreal-timeapplicationsintheareasofcomputervision,imageprocessing,
biometrics, virtual and augmented reality, neural networks, intelligent interfaces, and
biomimeticobject-visionrecognition.Autonomousrobotnavigationsetsoutenormous
theoreticalandappliedchallengestoadvancedroboticsystemsusingthesetechniques.
TenyearsafterthebirthofIWINACmeetingstheseideasmaintainthevisionaryob-
jectivesofProf.Mira.Thiswiderviewofthecomputationalparadigmgivesusmoreel-
bowroomtoaccommodatetheresultsoftheinterplaybetweennatureandcomputation.
TheIWINACforumthusbecomesamethodologicalapproximation(setofintentions,
questions,experiments,models,algorithms,mechanisms,explanationprocedures,and
engineering and computational methods) to the natural and artificial perspectives of
themindembodimentproblem,bothinhumansandinartifacts.Thisisthephilosophy
thatcontinuesinIWINACmeetings,the“interplay”movementbetweenthenaturaland
theartificial,facingthissameproblemeverytwoyears.Thissynergisticapproachwill
permitusnotonlytobuildnewcomputationalsystemsbasedonthenaturalmeasurable
phenomena,butalsotounderstandmanyoftheobservablebehaviorsinherenttonatural
systems.
Thedifficultyofbuildingbridgesbetweennaturalandartificialcomputationisone
ofthemainmotivationsfortheorganizationofIWINAC2015.TheIWINAC2015pro-
ceedingscontainthe worksselected by the Scientific Committeefrom morethan 190
submissions,aftertherefereeingprocess.Thefirstvolume,entitledArtificialCompu-
tation in Biology and Medicine, includes all the contributions mainly related to the
methodological, conceptual, formal, and experimental developments in the fields of
neural sciences and health. The second volume, entitled Bioinspired Computation in
Artificial Systems, contains the papers related to bioinspired programming strategies
andallthecontributionsrelatedtothecomputationalsolutionstoengineeringproblems
indifferentapplicationdomains.
