Robinson soon after volunteered
for the rescue that returned an injured
and emaciated JFK and other survivors
from behind enemy lines. Kennedy’s
epic swim to save his crew was later im-
mortalized by the film classic “PT 109.”
For many weeks after the incident,
officers Kennedy and Robinson shared
a tent in the Solomon Islands. As JFK
recovered, he borrowed a walking stick
given to Robinson by a local chief.
Robinson snapped the iconic photo-
graph of a slender JFK and cane that
would be published all over the world.
Kennedy used his rescuer’s camera for
a similar study of Robinson.
