An Anthology of Visual Double Stars
Moderntelescopesof evenmodestaperturecanshowthousandsofdouble stars.Many
arefaintandunremarkable buthundredsareworthsearchingout. Veterandoublestar
observerBobArgyleandhisco-authorstakeaclose-uplookattheirselectionof175of
thenightsky’smostinterestingdoubleandmultiplestars.Thehistoryofeachsystemis
laidoutfromtheoriginaldiscoverytowhatweknowatthepresenttimeaboutthestars.
Wide-fieldfinderchartsarepresentedforeachsystemalongwithplotsof theapparent
orbits and predicted future positions for the orbital systems. Recent measurements of
eachsystemareincluded,whichwillhelpyoutodecidewhethertheycanbeseeninyour
telescope as well as giving advice on the aperture needed. Double star observers of all
levelsofexperiencewilltreasurethelevelofdetailgiveninthisguidetothesejewelsof
thenightsky.
BobArgylehasobserveddoublestarssince1966.HehasbeenDirectoroftheWebbDeep-
SkySociety’sDoubleStarSectionsince1970.HeeditedObservingandMeasuringVisual
DoubleStars(Springer2012)andwritesmonthlycolumnsondoublestarsforAstronomy
NowandtheWebbSociety.HeisaFellowoftheRoyalAstronomicalSociety,aMember
oftheInternationalAstronomicalUnion,andEditorofObservatorymagazine.
MikeSwanworkedfortheOrdnanceSurveyinEngland.Hehasextensiveexperiencein
computergraphicsanduranographyandwassolelyresponsiblefortheWebbSocietyStar
Atlas. He is currently completing a two-part Atlas of Galactic Clusters. For thepresent
volumehehasproducedthefindercharts,theall-skycharts,andtheorbitalplots.
Andrew James has been interested in double stars since the late 1970s. He is a long-
term member, and past President, of the Astronomical Society of New South Wales
(ASNSW),andformeditsDoubleStarSectionin1979.Hisinterestsincludethehistorical
backgroundsandworksofvariousdiscoverersofsoutherndoublestars.
