Introduction
The idea for this directory was first suggested by a member of
The Alternatives in Print Task Force, or AIP, one of the committees
of the Social Responsibilities Round Table, a section of the
American Library Association. In 1992, AIP developed the idea into
a project and began to identify, among the thousands of small
presses publishing books today, significant alternative presses.
The first edition of this directory resulted, and was published in
January 1994. Like the first edition, this revised edition is a
collective effort of the AIP membership, supported by ALA funds
allocated to the Social Responsibilities Round Table.
For this directory, the AIP members defined "significant" as
those presses that have survived five years or more in the grueling
world of book publishing. The presses are usually literary or
politically left in outlook and philosophy, and have as their
primary focus a quality of text that is thought provoking, if not
consciously disturbing. The alternative press is considered a
subset of the small press world and is often thought of as growing
from the "mimeo revolution" of the 1950s and 60s. Today, presses
are more likely to be involved in the "desktop publishing
revolution," but their messages are much the same. They represent
a dissident voice of our time, not generally found in mainstream
publications.
This edition of the directory has expanded in several ways.
First, the number of entries grew from 75 in the first edition to
119 in this revised edition. Additional press names were submitted
by Chris Dodge, Charles Willett, and Byron Anderson. Second, the
directory expanded its Canadian coverage, making the directory more
North American, excluding Mexico. Future editions should widen
this geographic coverage. Third, new to this edition are the book
presses of associations, for example, the American Friends Service
Committee. The organizations may be known for the activities they
perform on behalf of others, but are often overlooked as a source
for book publications. Finally, the bibliography has been updated
and the subject headings expanded.
Tracking alternative press publications is elusive, and this
directory will help alleviate this problem. All presses have
publication lists or catalogs available upon request. As mentioned
in the introduction to the first edition, "The AIP Task Force
believes that alternative publications play a vital role in library
and other collections as well as in society, and that disseminating
information about their publishers is crucial."
Today, the alternative press has been strengthened, in part,
by financial grants, technology, and better distribution for small
press materials. This blends with a long tradition of editorial
dedication to particular subject areas, long work days, and little
or no financial reward. For further reading on this fascinating
world and the people who inhabit it, readers are encouraged to make
use of the bibliography at the end of this volume.
Readers are encouraged to add this title to library
collections for further dissemination of the information. For
libraries, an OCLC record has been created to aid in cataloging and
_holdings information for this title. Future editions of this
directory are planned, and suggestions, additions or criticisms are
welcome at any time.
